Product Description
This rifle would have been converted to Hornet most likely around 1949 making it one of the early models as production commenced in 1949. The original receiver is a 1918 Lithgow SMLE No1 Mk III. The Model 24 is built up from an original SMLE action. The barrel is similar in profile to the SMLE barrel (leftover stock?) and fitted with graduated slide back-sight and sporting style fore-sight. The trigger guard is modified to accept a 22 Hornet magazine. Butt and fore-end are chequered. On mine, it looks like 3 different types of timber was used – beautiful timber but hidden under some ugly brown varnish. "

so I understand Lithgow http://www.lithgowarms.com/about-us/ start making sporting rifles in 1949 using old SMLE parts on stock in different caliber. it seems not many were build at all because they dont get my attention before.
how many of this hunting rifles were made, how long and in which caliber.
you see military parts were used here but the rifle looks much better than a simple homemade sporter. not a lee speed but I would say collectible at all.

R5,000 about US$700 and A$1000 I think if the ER is still 7:1 US.

Do they come up a lot in Australia, in .22 Hornet?

I have one, it was the second rifle my father bought. Using IMI or ICI (came in a Blue and Yellow box from memory) ammo dad could have 10 in side an inch at 100 yards with it's standard sights. It wasn't until I started using small pistol primers in my handloads that I could get 5 shot groups just under 1 MOA to just over 1 MOA with a scope. Heavy for a 22 Hornet but easy to use. The trigger on mine is a two stage SMLE trigger but lighter than the standard SMLE trigger.

To me, it is an underrated rifle. This might be because this along with a Browning take down semi auto were the rifles I was taught to shoot with and grew up with.

Yes, not uncommon. Obviously they don't appear every day but across the used gun sites and auctions you would easily see more than a dozen a year.

I have a Lithgow made SMLE MkIII ,factory converted to sporting configuration with pistol grip butt stock and schnabel tipped forend ,with chequering.It has a hooded ramped fore sight and one standing two folding leaf rear sight. Chambered in 303/25 ( 303 British necked down to 25 cal for our international brothers ).
Its fitted with a Field Industries side mount for a scope .Unfortunately I didnt get the Field scope ,but have a 6x Pecar Berlin period scope in the mounts .

Between 1949 and ~1961, the Lithgow Small Arms Factory made 7,700 Model 24 .22 Hornet rifles on the SMLE action, in association with Slazengers Australia.

What Matt said: maybe a dozen per year, but not all in VGC or better!

The nice thing about the Enfields, is no extractor changes, from .605" rim of the .45 basic case, down to the Hornet's .350" rim.
A few guys I used to shoot with, made up long range prone rifles using #4 actions with fast twist .224" bls. chambered for .223
- no extractor mods needed. When retracting the bolt, the empties simply fell into the box magazine.
The #3, of course, would make up a Hornet, NP.
