George Rushby Rifles?

Can anybody shed some light on what rifle Rushby used through his hunting career?

I remember reading that he had a 9.3 double which he preferred for lion. There was no elaboration on whether this was a 9.3x62 chambering or a 9.3x74R. I can't remember the source. Was this gun even a double or just a magazine rifle?

In his book 'No More the Tusker' he mentions using a .318 magazine rifle, and 577 and 600 cal double rifles.

In "Hunter is Death"(?) he mentions a 9.3 x 74 double that he had to sell to go on overseas leave.

He was unsuccessful at being able to buy it back after he returned and had to adopt a magazine rifle.

I've tracked down a copy of Hunter is Death, so will have a read of that. The other tittle is out of print for now.

There are several copies of "No more the Tusker" on AbeBooks in U,S & U.K. but serious money

I did see a few copies floating around on the used book sites as you say. But yes, they have reached collector values. A shame really. I think the stories of the old hunters should be more available to the current generation for they help inspire us. Somebody needs to do another reprint.

If you are really into the old hunting tales get an Amazon Kindle or use an Ipad

Nothing like reading a real book but there are dozens of the old hunting books including the main 4 elephant books and some Corbett for only a dollar or so
Some are scanned in and awkward to read but at least they are available (I have over 60)
Although they need getting used to easy to read especially in bed before dozing off!
