I wonder why the flanged version was chambered and not the belted magnum cartridge for a bolt action?

The original owner may have had a double flanged version as well. One bullet for both.

A Vintage Holland ‘.30 Super’ Here At Westley Richards

Hollands ‘.30 Super’ cartridge is without doubt one of those all time classics that spurned a modern generation of .300 magnums. Introduced in 1925 it was developed to fill the gap between Hollands .275 and .375 Magnum cartridges, at a time when the British gunmakers were competing incessantly to cater for a booming worldwide hunting market. India and Africa were the principle hunting destinations of the time where the topography and native big game species allowed for the use of these ‘modern’ long range magnum cartridges.

Interestingly the .30 Super does differ from the .300 Holland & Holland Belted Magnum so care must be taken when loading for this particular cartridge. As a cartridge the .30 Super was capable of handling 150, 180 and 220 grain bullets all of which respectively proved devastating on medium to large game. Elmer Keith the famous American gun writer, editor and hunter was a big fan of the cartridge and built several rifles up which he used to take numerous North American big game animals including several trophy class sheep.

Complete in original canvas case with accessories, the rifle has an honest pedigree.

As the .300 Holland & Holland Belted Magnum the calibre won world acclaim in 1935 when it was used to win the Wimbledon Cup at 1000 yards. Such was the success of the calibre that it led to a new generation of American magnums including the .300 Weatherby Magnum introduced in 1944 and the .300 Winchester Magnum introduced in 1963.

This particular Holland & Holland take-down rifle was built in 1928 and so can claim to be one of the early .30 Super’s. In pretty much original condition, the rifle has a used look about it yet the bore is still sharp and the rifle a slick shooter. Contained in its original canvas case the rifle makes for a great usable vintage rifle.

Hollands side mounts with a period scope appear to be a later addition to the rifle.

Hollands take-down magazine rifle has always been a classic in the sporting rifle world.

Further details on the rifle can be obtained from Ricky Bond ricky@westleyrichards.co.uk

A more recent sibling in .270 Winch is for sale, probably for a fraction of the price of the .300 H&H one, at https://www.dorleac-dorleac.com/arme/stalking-rifle-2/

I believe that rifle to be chambered for a belted cartridge, the early loading "super .30" loading differs from the later magnum loading though they use virtually the same case. Note the light cordite proof. The two different chamber drawings are shown here:

I am pretty 100% sure WR knows the difference in a flanged chambering and a belted one for a rifle they are selling.

Noted the cartridges in the photos are belted. Probably no .30 Super cartridges on hand.

I was thinking the same thing.

Would make a lot of sense for a .375 as well.

It was a fairly common conversion from .400/.350 Rigby to .375 H&H, but since the action was built with a slant magazine box to accommodate the rimmed Rigby cartridge, I see no reason why it could not have accommodated a rimmed .375 H&H as well. The action looks like the slant box version to me.

This is my .350 Rigby Magnum, built on a slant box action. Notice the shape of the trigger.

John, the 30 Super is a belted cartridge like the 300 H&H and was actually the forerunner to that cartridge. Dimensionally they are very similar but the velocity on the 300 H&H was also increased when they changed then name, which they did to ring it in line with their other bolt action cartridges such as the 244, 275 and 375 H&H. The rifle shown definitely fire the belted magnum case.

300 h&h is a favourite round for me. I shot with a 300 bolt rifle for years (HOLLAND) It exploded and the bolt rifle was in bits. I never fully recovered. ( flinch issues ). Since then I have had built a BOSS rifle 300 (takedown) and in 2012 ordered a new PURDEY double rifle flanged version. The PURDEY is still not finished they are not simple projects to complete (Purdey have been outstanding to do business with). Bespoke London best guns are a lifetime of labour. I don’t buy second hand guns to hunt with any more. To look at yes, to risk my life no. Long live the 300 h&h there is nothing I would not hunt on earth with this calibre.

OK. I always thought the .30 Super was the name of the flamged/rimmed H&H cartridge. Now understood.

Probably the .30 Super Flanged or .30 Flanged Super, was where I got it from.
