Internal flights in Aus
      #33710 - 23/06/05 06:24 PM

Folks,
I am putting together a sojourn for down under in June/July next year, and any helpful info on internal flights from Perth to Darwin to Cairns and then to Sydney would be most appreciated.
Cheers,
M

I do not have the websites but there is plenty of flights that you can get , the airlines are

Qantas
Jetstar
Virgin Blue

and some regional airlines.

I am not sure what country you live in but plan your holiday
around where you arrive and leave the country from.

This will make a big Difference to the cost.

Sydney, Cairns Darwin, Perth is much better than some other options
which would have you flying all over the place.

You can save money flying FROM Perth by flying on
what they call the Red Eye Special - it leaves at around midnight
from Perth and gets into the East Coast 6.00am.

Hope this helps

Hell these forums can be helpful !
Basically, I intend landing in Perth, then to Arnhemland for Buff on a 5 day hunt(via Darwin), from there to Cairns for a couple of days at the Reef, then to Sydney to catch up with the Kith and Kin for a few days, before heading home to the UK.
Just trying to work out domestic flights, costs, avaiabilities etc...making the most of local knowledge.

Look up Qantas and Virgin blue on the net. You'll get all thats needed from their sites. Both fly into Darwin. Red eye's do save you money. There is a new hotel at Darwin airport if you get in late and want to stay close.

I have web addresses in the LINKS forums below for Qantas and Virgin airlines. The TRAVEL LINKS forum. Both airlines allow internet bookings and the facility is great to check flights, times and costs.

Remember to arrange with them that you wish to carry firearms and ammo in checked luggage. Qantas will send or fax to you an authorisation letter.

There is a morning flight at about 7am Darwin to Gove to Cairns. Cairns to Gove to Darwin in the afternoon, each day. Depending on whom you are hunting with it might be cheaper to charter out of Gove rather than Darwin. The Gove Peninsula is at Nhulunbuy (splg?) on the North East corner of Arnhemland.

A flight from Cairns to Sydney and a flight Perth to Darwin should be easy.

Some international flights stop off in Darwin so Perth might not be necessary if you don't want to go there. Watch SE Asia airports for firearms though.

Sounds like you have a good plan.

As per what NitroX says,

"Remember to arrange with them that you wish to carry firearms and ammo in checked
luggage. Qantas will send or fax to you an authorisation letter."

The email address to request Authorisation is to Michael Montuori

mmontuori@qantas.com.au

Make sure you get it as they can refuse to fly you if you don't have it
and it's getting stricter all of the time.

The Sequence of cities you are looking at is fine. As per the other poster,
have a look at flying direct int Darwin if you are staying in Perth for any reason.

As hinted by NItroX, I'd definitely go London - Johannesberg - Perth then Perth to Darwin over the standard route which probably involves stops in Bangkok or Singapore.

Not sure I'd want to be packing a rifle through Singapore and any nonprescription medicine in the luggage might really upset the locals. Also given the potential alternates along that route, a problem could result in landing in some other Asian country unfriendly to passengers travelling with firearms.

QANTAS has their schedules available online as well as in downloadable pdf files and a small program called QANTIM for download that allows you to click and drag routes on a world map and pull up flight numbers and schedules. All the downloads are on this page:

Gents,
I am most grateful for the advice and info.
I will be hiring/borrowing a weapon out there, as to cart one half way across the world would be a bit of a nightmare.
I aim to hunt with Graham Willaims, and am already looking forward to it.
Cheers,
Mpofu.
