My Westley Richards
      #336706 - 17/01/20 06:24 AM

Here we go again, trying to upload some photos of my Westley Richards rifle in caliber 303 british. Is is made 1920, and it is really smooth to shooth with. The 23 mm thick barrel makes it pretty stable.

Thanks for welcoming me here ! Looking forward to look around here on all the old crafted pieces and getting to know lots of good people with the same interest.

Wow - that is one BIG barrel!
Looks bigger than 7mm - perhaps a 318?
Will you have to get the sights, or have they been removed in this case.
Certainly beautiful timber & metal work!
Justly proud you should be.

Thanks !
Yes it's a nice and simple old piece. I like the plain style.
There was a diopter on it, mounted after left the factory. It was visible on how the holes were made, not factory standard.
I don't want to change the repeating handle, it's angle to get a scope on. So it is on the way a custom made from Nordholms Sweden steel mount for an Aimpoint H1. Not matching eras, but ideal for hunting up to 80 meters.
It' the 303 in it. Mostly feeded with Remington's Core-Lokt mushrooms.

Yeah, 303 = 311 if I remember right.

That rifle is not just a run of the mill .303 Brit. Length and weight seem to indicate some special purpose built- long range target gun perhaps. Use a diopter sigh would support that. This is a special gun.

Is that a factory barrel? Are there any proof marks on the barrel? Muzzle is not crowned? Barrel length-inches? What is the diameter of the muzzle, 1 inch? A gun of that era shouldn't be metric and and metric measurement won't make it easy to identify. Any inch measurements might conform to purpose and literature of era.

Action could be metric measure however if sourced from Germany. Action looks to be a Mauser pattern.

Yes, the owner who had it before me told me it was orderd from W R by an australian target shooter named J T Lake from Adelaide. He ordered it at the end of his career.
Yes the barrel has marks with 303 00000xxx(shall take a closer look.) and a crown-symbol side of the number there. Same crown are stamped on the handle for repeat the action. And serialnr under it too. Matches the one stamped above the action.
So the barrel seems to be original.
The width of the barrel, hmm it is me that takes measures in centimeters because we use it here in Sweden and Europe.
But yes one inch is 25,4 mm and the barrel is 23 mm thick.

So they bought actions from Mauser ? Thought bigger companies made their own stuff. But this definetley looks like Mauser-action and it is a 98 for sure. Had an old Mauser 96 before, so the difference is clear to me.

Thick, target/varmint weight barrel, but no sights, interesting.

There are two boltholes in the front left from a sight. And was a diopter on it.

Trying to remember something I "may" have read 30 years ago about target shooting from 60 years before that. Holy crap, am I getting to to be the old guy in the room?

May have read back in the 90's, that back in the 30's match shooters were trying achieve as close to dead square 90 degree crown as was possible. They carefully and meticulously squared the muzzle and deburred the edge of the rifling in their quest for perfection.

All these years and I finally figured out the only real flaw in some of these fabulous target guns is from attaching a human to the trigger.

Say what you want about the Mauser action, but in my opinionated opinion it is an outstanding action one of the best ever made.

What a wonderful gun you have shown us TIMBERMAN. Thank you.

Thank you all guys here for help and lots of interesting knowledge.

And yes, I agree the Mauser M98 looks like a really long lasting good solution.

Unusual heavy barrel with no sights? Obviously a special order.
