We have two best quality .22 Hornet rifles in the making using Ziegenhahn & Diem 5.6 x35R actions known as Zi-Di.
Depending on the manufacturer, the quality varies from good to excellent ; the systems produced by Ziegenhahn at Zella Melhis being superbly manufactured.
Many of these interesting little rifles have been abused because users wanted to shoot .22 Hornet cartridges when the caliber was originally the old continental 5.6x35R.
As it is a long term project on which I work in a spare time I will still try to publish some photos.

I have one of these . I had one with a better stock and sold it . I then regretted that and bought another.They are very fine , much like a miniature Mauser with the same between the wars German styling .
I had trouble getting the original ammo as the hornet round has a rim which is too thick .I had my poor gunsmith remove by hand labour a small amount from BEHIND the rim . If you remove brass from the front the primer will sit proud .
Its very accurate .
I have a 22mm Hensoldt scope on it with lever slide on mount.
The stock wood on my rifle is rather plain unlike the earlier one I had .
I have been thinking of getting mine custom stocked with a good blank .They are worth it .
I will be interested to see what Joel at Dorleac does with his.
I will try to upload some photos but I can't do that myself
I did hear that some om these rifles were chambered for 25 Remington which is the 25/35 Win. without a rim .

I should add that my serial number is 14284 and marked ZI-Di D.P.G.M
5.6x35
I researched the round some years ago but I seem to remember this chambering is the same as the 22 black powder Winchester . Whatever ,I couldn't get brass for it .

Some ZI-DI system poor pictures.
You can look here at an original sample as well at the mechanism on which I work in lost time.
Originally the caliber is 5.6x35R Vierling.
The action, although fine and compact, is oversized for this cartridge. The manufacturing quality is both ingenious and remarkable because nothing has been overlooked. The whole appears to be entirely machined from forged blanks, a tradition typical of the Thuringia metallurgical basin where Suhl and Zella-Melhis are located.
On the version that is the basis for our project the action has been trued and modified.
The new ERA single stage trigger made possible a lighter let off and much faster striking.
I used a false barrel to control .22 Hornet rounds loading and ejection.
It's interesting to note that the ingenious mechanism of the clip served as a model for the one used later by J.G Anschutz on his own .22 Hornet rifles, the two being very close.
Being a long-term project I will try to keep you updated on the progress of the work because what you see is only a test starting point.

That is beautiful work on that action and despite your protestations the photographs are equally well done .
I am looking for someone to upload my photographs so please be patient .
Some differences for my rifle : I removed the military style trigger guard and replaced it with a shotgun guard as i have seen on some Anschutz and Brno 21 rifles .
I also kept the original integrated top slide on base . You seem to have removed ..what? I can't see how much has been removed with my 70+ year old eyes but you seem to have rounded the top of the action .
Are you going to keep the original chambering?
I have heard of some of these rifles in 25 Remington .
Is 5.6x35R brass still available in Europe ?
I look forward to see more of this project . My refurbishment is looking very modest already .

I prefer to keep the original floorplate which corresponds better to a single trigger, especially having made a trigger that fits more back in the guard.
In Europe shotgun type guards are used more for double set triggers (see pre-war M-s productions).
The Zi-Di system was produced with several receiver variations and not all of them have the standard 11mm rail. The one in the photo was plain and wore a soft soldered rear claw mount base.
I have finished profiling the new barrel machined from an L-W match quality blank and chambered for the .22 Hornet.
I will try to take some photos.
My goal is to build a sister rifle to our previous man sized rimfire made on a much modified pre-war Mauser .22lr repeater action.

Bolt handle is the locking lug? Looks almost like a .22.

Yes. One lug is usually not conductive to accuracy. This was changed in the offspring of the '71 Mauser, the 1888 version. Notes from a Mauser.book I have noted this.
