I saw this recently.

There had been an unusual rush of FN 5.7 handguns popping up on the used market all of the sudden. Did a quick check of current news and found the Ruger press release.

Go figure!

Info I pulled off of the net..

5.7x28 ammo is a relatively small but very fast centerfire cartridge that was developed after NATO requests for a 9mm Luger replacement caliber. About a decade since that development, 5.7x28 is the caliber of choice for military and law enforcement in about 40 countries all over the world.

Published reports indicate that as factory loaded the 5.7x28mm drives a 32 grain bullet, load #SS190-AP (armor piercing), at a muzzle velocity (MV) of 2350 fps with 390 ft. lbs. of muzzle energy (ME). The 28 grain spitzer bullet, load #SS195LF-JHP, has a muzzle velocity of 2350 fps and muzzle energy of 290 ft.

It is the caliber that the Muzz terrorist Army Major Nidal Hasan used to shoot the troops at Fort Hood on 5 November 2009.

I first heard of the round some ten plus years ago when SA Police listed it as an evil cartridge needing banning, he 5.7x28, .338 Lapua, .460 Cheytec, .50 BMG, and similar LR cartridge but also including the .416 Remington Magnum!

Some bright spark wanting these "sniper" cartridges banned. There was a hoohah over this, the cops secretly threatened to ban anything greater than a .30-06 if we made a noise over their banning plans, but we ignored it. I wrote to every newspaper, TV station, member of parliament, minister etc. Pointing out the lack of logic, lack of evidence, any logic for the change. After this I believe I got blacklisted for a while and PTAs (permits to acquire) got lost several times. I missed out on Mike's Bailey Bradshaw .22 Hornet DR he was selling at the time. They lost my paperwork three times. Anyway Mike got five times the price for it than what he asked from me.

So the 5.7x28 was listed because supposedly it was a cop killer, and it was so deadly it could penetrate bullet proof vests ... the police bright spark must have read some blog somewhere and got scared from what he read ...

Also did you know the assault rifles used by the SGC Units, Star Gate Units, that fight the System Lords, the Go'uld, these assault rifles used the 5.7x28 round. And COULD penetrate the armour of their minions, the Jaffa. Fearsome warriors with go'uld worms in their stomachs, giving them strong and health regenerative powers.

So if round, the 5.7x28 can combat inter-planetary evil powers, how could it be trusted in the hands of mere subjects, civilians and peasants?!

G'Day Fella's,

Thanks for sharing Ripp.
As NitroX has higlighted above, even the FN before it, and the Ruger 57, pricked my interest.
But I probably won't buy one, as we can't conceal carry down here (as we are just "Victims in Waiting").

A fun plinker?
The pistol looks very complicated inside.....a lot of 'safety features' built in perhaps?

Here's a Ruger in 5.7x28 that reflects the KISS principle

Demolition Ranch, Officer Greg and Kentucky Ballistics have all done videos on it.
I am not impressed, although it does possess fairly good ballistics for a small calibre pistol/revolver round.
It has about the same power, I guess, as a warmly loaded .22 Hornet - from a revolver. Seems to me, 40gr. at about 1,500fps.
A longer barrel would, of course, increase the ballistics, but still less than a .22 hornet from a rifle, especially a modern rifle like CZ or Anschutz.

I'm getting about 2000 with the 40 grain bullets, over 2200 with 30 grain bullets, all handloaded.

Cool thing is that I can load it down to 22mag rifle velocity or lower.

Fun!

My bad - I was thinking about the "new" 7.5x28 or whatever the length is.

For a wheel gun, Tinker, that's really good!

We've done revolvers in 218 Bee, 25-20, Hornet, and others.

This one runs at far higher pressures.
I've been going over 50k in that converted revolver.
It's a screamer.

OK a little history. The 5.7 was developed by FN as a candidate for the US Army's PDW (Personal Defense Weapon program). A PDW was meant as a weapon for troops NOT needing a rifle; but better served than just having a pistol--picture mechanics in a combat area working on vehicles with their rifles leaning against a tree or locked in a rack. The PDW was meant to be something they could have with them, that had a 200+ meter range with the ability to defeat (soft) body armor.

HK produced the a 4.6mm cartridge in a weapon similar in size to a M10 SMG. The FN design is the P90. While the P90 is more of a shoulder fired weapon, the HK (like the Mac 10) is a "pistol" with a folding stock that can be holster carried.

FN seeing something of a civilian market also produced a semi auto version (PS90) and the FN57 pistol. As AP handgun ammo is banned in the US, the neutered civilian ammo fails one of the primary intended pluses of the cartridge especially with the proliferation of cheap body armor and its use by criminals. The cost of the FN rifle and pistol, as well as the cost and limited availability of ammo had almost ended the cartridge.

The Ruger pistol saved the cartridge, or at least has breathed new life into it. Its a low (read that as no) recoil cartridge that moves at amazing speed. Plus it packs small into a magazine. A mag of twenty fits into a standard grip size handgun. The FN57 is the current handgun of the US Secret Service.

Comparing the FN to the Ruger, both guns are of similar size. Thus far Ruger has not released any magazine beyond the standard (20 rnds). The FN57 is available with 20 round mags and an extended 30 round mag. The FN pistol sells for $1500+/-; while the Ruger lists for $600ish. The Ruger is nice; but the FN is nicer. Is it worth double the price? IDK.

Ultimately they are both toys which do you prefer, a race car or racing stripes on your pick up?

Wheel guns are Real guns!

Great varmint and small game holster gun.
Absolute hell on jackrabbits.
That Dead Air Mask was handy at the bench for the first shots in the shop. I think it could be really useful in the field too.

Currently I have it fitted with a Burris Fast fire 3 and an ALG sidewinder as a thread protector.
It's a laughter generator.
