When are deer without velvet?
      #33074 - 15/06/05 12:35 AM

A close friend told me the old deers shed their velvet before the 1st of June. I strongl disagree. *
What You friends in Europe are thinking of?

Larcher,
if we are talking about Roe deer, your friend is broadly right. Velvet should be shed by the end of May but this can be affected by many things. If it is cold in April/May as it frequently is in the UK, fraying or shedding may be delayed and the velevet can become hardened on the antlers making it difficult to remove. Although your friend cannot state it will always be done by 1st June, in most cases, it will be.

Thanks Metswedi,

You are absolutely right concerning roe deer.
I mean the Red deer. The odd deers I saw are in velvet. The old ones will have frayed only in July.

In that case Larcher you are right, certainly in the UK, the stags will begin shedding velvet when the antlers have fully formed and that is usually around July.
