I have two fox. one is an A grade 20ga Philly gun with two sets of barrels and the other is a Sterlingworth 12ga with a nickel or chrome frame that I have never seen on any other fox before. I don't seem to find time to shoot these guns either.

As I now have 2 bird hunting dogs, I think you should let me take that 20 gauge out for a run or two.. letting then sit idle is NOT good for shotguns ..

Merely trying to help you out..

I am sure they could use the exercise but they may have to have a chaperone.

I learned to shoot with a pre-War 5 shot Browning in 16 gauge and used it for everything, quail, rabbits and ducks. It was not until I started shooting skeet that I turned my back on that gauge. Since then, ammunition has been harder and harder to find, and when I do find it, there is a distinct limitation in the choice of loads. For that reason, I have turned to the 3" Magnum 20 gauge for a lightweight hunting gun.

My Krieghoff "Teck" O/U double rifle in .458 WM was built on a 16 gauge frame, because Krieghoff didn't offer a 12 gauge version of the action at the time. They now do, and I have a .500 NE built on that frame.

I ordered shot barrels for my .458 DR, but chose 20 gauge Magnum over 16 gauge because of ammunition availability. It proved to be a real winner, whether on sand grouse, guinea fowl or ducks in Africa.
I'll believe the 16 gauge has made a comeback when I see an assortment of ammunition on the shelves.

I’ve got a 16 gauge 2 1/2”. I have yet to find 2 1/2” shells in Canada so I cut the crimps off commercially available 2 3/4” shells, and roll crimp a waxed cardboard wad over the shot. The gun patterns well, is very light to carry and comes to the shoulder and balances beautifully. It sees some use hunting ruffed grouse (aka chickens in local parlance) but competes for my attention with a Grulla Armes Windsor in 28 gauge. I don’t do much waterfowl hunting so my 12 gauge only sees use on the clays fields which leaves my two sub gauge guns my undivided attention for hunting chickens. I dumped my cheapie truck gun .410 when I found new joy with the 28.

I got on a SxS kick about six years ago and bought about 25 of them. Mostly large bore guns and English and American guns. Haven't shot any of them much but plan to.

25 of them???

THAT is a little more than a "kick'..

Congrats, that is awesome.. I haven't had that many shotguns in my entire life.. maybe 15-20 total..you picked up 25 ..impressive..keep up the good work..

I read an article this weekend that stated they are now estimating there are over 423 Million firearms in the US.. that too is an impressive number..

I had a (1902) 16 bore Husky with 2 1/2" chambers that had gentle leads into the bore. I found the Federal 2 3/4" hulls were actually only 2 5/8" long after firing so I just shot those. There was a slight curve (after firing) in the crimped part, but less than 1/8" long.

Weird how things are and are not available in various parts of the world.. had this same discussion the other day while I was in Texas.. they can not get 28 Nosler brass.. I walked into the local gun store here yesterday and there was 8 boxes..

Same can be said for 16 gauge shotgun ammo.. every story here has it.. supply and demand I suppose.. or in the case of Texas..lots more people .. so things go quickly..

Unfortunately I don't even own even 1% of the 423 million but that leaves me something to strive for.

It is absolute no problem to get more than one 16 ga load in europe but for years - decades you can read the 16 ga is close to dead.
I am not care about this so long we can reload and Magtech brass is available.

Every 15-20 years someone declares the 16 ga has risen from the dead. Funny thing is, you never hear that it died in the first place.

I have about ten 16's, heaviest is an NID that I can use for ducks if I like, lightest is a 2-1/2" Kettener at 5-8. I can get 2-3/4 loads at Walmart, the lighter stuff must be ordered from RST.

Agree with the above, Browning reintroduced the SWEET 16 just a few years ago...there are 16 gauges available from several companies..and yes, the ammo is readily available..

My first shotgun was a sixteen. It was not very old, it was second hand, and it was my ticket to deer hunt since that's all you could use. It was a Mossberg bolt with a 2 shot box magazine. Back in the days of the mid 1950's the average hunter in our woods carried a SXS, but for me just 14 the bolt was good enough. Over the years, and owning many single, doubles, O/U, pumps and autoloaders from 410 to 10 gauge, the soft spot for the 16 has remained for me the true upland gun and gauge. I still have the 16 bolt from dad those 56 years ago along with some of their mates.
