G'Day Fella's,

Not sure if this is the best place for this but will do.
I hope this is of some interest to you.

My acquaintance with BRNO rifles began in 1970, in Germany, where I was a university student. My purchase was a ZKK 602 in .375 H&H, which I planned to use on a driven boar hunt. I was struck by the resemblance to the pre-War Model 70 Winchester, but stymied by the safety, which, as has been pointed out, works back to front. I still have the rifle, changed to .500 Jeffrey and fitted with a new, Winchester style bolt shroud and safety. I would not hesitate to take it with me to Africa, were I ever to go there again.

My encounter with the ZG 47 came much later, after I had already made the acquaintance of the Models 21 and 22. It is a superior rifle in all respects except for the back to front safety, which has also been replaced with a Model 70 version.

Over the years, I have also acquired Models ZKK 600 and 601. One 600 has served as the basis for a 6.5X64 Brenneke rifle, which saw action in the hunting field as recently as last Monday. It has never missed a deer it was aimed at and never failed to drop it with one shot.

Even though my first love is the pre-64 Model 70 and in particular those made before WW II, the BRNO rifles have earned my respect and admiration.

This is my old ZKK 602, with its new CZ stock and Winchester safety in its new identity as a .500 Jeffrey:

G'Day Fella's,

Thanks for that information xausa, and Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Donuts!

The older BRNO and present CZ rifles/firearms, really are so underated.
I look upon the Czech people, as the Quite Achievers of Europe.

I hope you enjoyed the read.

Nice article, well done, yes the Brnos are way cool old guns !

I just picked up a scuffy Brno ZKK600 pop up peep .270 to fit a .458Win ZKK602 take off barrel on to & end up with a smaller lighter Brno .458Win... I hope it works, been told to get a 9.3X62 mag box ?

Just a side note.
In 1972, a newly posted RCMP officer to Smither's BC, went into the local sporting good shop, Family Ski and Sport Shop & bought a BRNO ZKK 602 in .358 Norma Magnum, dies and .358 bullets in 280gr.RN Speer.

In 1973, transferred to Surrey B.C., I started shooting at the Barnet range in Burnaby with my cousin, a Beaufighter Pilot from WW11, RAF/RCAF out Scotland in the "Strike Wings".

Anyway, I started off shooting 250gr. Speer SP's as they'd group into and sometimes under 1/2" AT 100 YARDS. That cousin, Eddie (Art Edwards) talked me into getting a Lyman mould, casting bullets and shooting cast bullets with the rifle's peep sight, in the 3-position SFC (Shooting Federation of Canada) contests. That I did and placed right with him, Sharpshooter, 1-up from Marksman - LOL. He was cheap, and refused to shoot anything but cast bullets in his match .308. I was a 2 MOA rifle off bags, so Sharpshooter, he was. I might have those designations crossed.

I had an opportunity to pick up an unfired .375H&H ZKK602 barrel for my BRNO, so I did and a gun smith, Ian Dingwall in Richmond, BC, did the replacement work. The .375 barrel cranked up, sights straight up and down and it headspaced just fine. Amazing!

After that, I went with the Lyman #375296 bullet for my 3-position shooting - for a while. In 75, I sold the .375 and built a dedicated .308 match rifle, 41.5gr. IMR4895, CCI BR2's, 168gr.MKs & instantly made Master and that was that.

I regretted selling the .375 BRNO the instant I did it. A year later, I tried to buy it back and the lad I sold it to, said he'd turned down all his buddies who wanted it as well.

It was 30 years before I got another BRNO, this one a 600, in 7x57 and I let that one go as well!!!!!!!

Anyone putting a Model 70 safety on a ZG47 should be put before a firing squad !!!!!!!!!

Exactly Homer. Seems I get a rifle shooting perfectly, then lose interest in it and it's gone. Usually to my buddy Keith.

G'Day Fella's,

I do agree with you 500Boswell.
The factory ZG bolt shroud, is a work of art in itself, why change it.

Daryl, it appears your buddy Keith, has been the winner there mate.

I won't object, as long as I have my ZG47 (with the Model 70 safety) to defend myself with.
