5,6x39 Vostock/220 Lapua story
      #334949 - 29/11/19 12:24 AM

27.11. 6 pm - sitting on the kittchen table of a hunting rifle collector who had a russian bolt action in 5,6x39. he is asking if its possible to find loaded ammo in finland for his rifle.the cartridge ist still loaded in russia but impossible to import.
being not very positiv about this because the 220 lapua is not loaded for decades anymore. only brass is available for benchrest shooter who never look for loaded ammo.

28.11 8.45 am and 250 km away

just leaving the shop of my gunmaker. at a glance I look over a board with maybe 50 different and multicoulered ammo boxes but only one little simple brown cardboard box in the corner catch my eyes.
grab it and can't believe it

Is this the same as the AK74 military cartridge?

What sort of ballistics?

Thanks.

no its not, ak 74 fire the 5,45 x39 probabyl developt just before 1974

look at the drawing , its much smaller and available today anywhere - this would be no problem
http://www.municion.org/5_45x39/5_45x39.htm

the 5,6x39 is a 7,62x39 kalaschnikov necked down to 5,6 mm in the early 1960s
http://www.municion.org/5_6Vostok/5_6Vostok.htm

the cartridge was loaded once by sako and lapua as the 220 Russian but now you find only lapua brass

the tula ammo factory made it with steel cases http://tulammo.ru/en/production/vintovochnye-patrony/patron-5-6-39/

3,5 gramm bullet at 900m/sec

here for comparison 5,45x39
http://tulammo.ru/en/production/vintovochnye-patrony/patron-5-45-39/

and 223rem
http://tulammo.ru/en/production/vintovochnye-patrony/patron-5-56kh45-tyazhyelaya-pulya-/

problem is nobody import this cartridge anymore from russia

Yes.
I was digging in the shop today looking through the extensive cartridge collection looking for an original 220 Russian cartridge.
Nope.

many years ago a friend in finland found some loaded Lapua .220 Russian what I directed to the owner of this rifle then. iirc, this was older stuff, maybe from the 80s and full metall jacket so no hunting load.
the lapua brass is in high regard by beenchrest shooter until this day but they don't want them loaded.
