500 Schüler
      #334957 - 29/11/19 05:04 AM

some pics of a Schüler made 500 Schüler I had in the hands yesterday.
its maybe not out of interest for the owner of a Schüler rifle that the family having the records. the owner of this gun was visited by a member of the Schüler family who want to shoot it with Romey ammo. He was saying that 17 500Schüler rifles at all were made and most of them were sold over Jansen in Brussels into the belgian congo. in the east of the congo on the boarder to sudan, kenia and german east africa there were once big tusker.

the barrel is massive and looks like artillery but the gun is surprisingly easy to handle, there was a 500 NE Merkel DR rifle also and it was a huge difference in favor of the Schüler

original pre war gecado made 12,7x70 Schüler, cost 100 euro

Wow what a wonderful piece of history you have there Lancaster; I would have thought more of these 'artillery pieces' would have been made though?
It must be balanced well for you to give it the nod over the Merkel double!

As I understand it, right about 100 examples of the Schuler Jumbo were made.
I think that is pretty accurate as I have one, another resides not forty miles away and I handled another not fifteen miles away from home some years ago.
Unless, of course, they tend to congregate in Colorado.

All I've seen were made pretty much to a pattern as the example above is.
Wonderful, powerful rifles.

I hear the 500 Schuler is a far better cartridge than the 500 Jeffery, just like the 7x57 is superior to the 275 Rigby

Thanks for sharing, Lancaster.

Yes I’m aware the cartridges above are prettt much the same if not identicle.

Not so familiar with the Schüler .500 rifle, is that a 3 down single stack magazine?

.500 Schüler, .500 Jeffery, cousin to both is my .500 AHR......enough horsepower to separate the men from the boys (without the need of a crowbar)

I think I posted a few pictures of mine years ago but decided to drag her out for another photo shoot.
Very similar to the one Lancaster handled - one difference being the barrel band placement.
Other than that, could be twins!

Sold through Lyon & Lyon, Calcutta.

Ben,
That’s a nice one......and marked Lyon & Lyon - Calcutta too.
Any British proof marks, or just German ones?

No British proofs.

It's funny, forever I thought the Lyon & Lyon mark looked crude and phony until I saw another Jumbo with exactly the same style.
That rifle was at the Bass Pro in Denver and looked either refinished or very near new condition. The wood color was quite light on that one.

Bass Pro in Denver? Geez, I’d have been all over it....I’m on the wrong side of the State........I like my .500AHR, but an original .500 Schüler would be too shit hot to resist.
Steve could have refinished it and made the wood look right.

No British proofs on yours?.....hmmmm.....odd for a Lyon & Lyon (presumably India) rifle.
Interesting that I can find no reference to “Lyon & Lyon” ever trading as the engraved “Lyon & Lyon Ltd. Calcutta” on yours. I wonder? Especially as the bulk of the Schüler large bores seemingly would have gone to East Africa in that era?
..
.......If you ever get the urge to “kick your .500 Schuler to the curb” let me know. (probably above my pay grade tho...)
- Mike

BTW: What is it about Colorado and the ultra-bores? A lot of vintage ultra bores live here.......
