Depression era G&H 1903 sporter
      #334996 - 29/11/19 01:28 PM

I recently picked up what I believe to be a Griffin and Howe depression era sporter made by reworking an NRA 1903 sporter supplied by the Armory. The rifle has British style folding leaf rear sights, a Lyman aperture sight, ramp front sight and sight hood, horn forend, metal pistol grip cap, checkered forend and pistol grip, and a G&H single lever sidemount base (no scope though). I have a Remington 30S by John Dubiel in .276 Dubiel which has the same folding rear sights. The caliber marking is ".30-06 govt" in exactly the same font and style as found on other G&H sporters of the period.

The gun is missing its butt plate. With respect to the butt plates on these rifles, Michael Petrov states that G&H "used the standard Winchester one". I assume this would have been the Model 54 butt plate as that was the Winchester bolt action rifle in production at the time. Does anyone have any insight into this, or other insights on these rifles? Michael of course would be the guy to ask if he were alive. I'll be happy to make some photos if anyone is interested, but will need someone else to post them.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Here are some iPhone photos of the 1903 assuming the links work. I have no idea how to post the actual photos.

The rifle seems to me to be a rework of an NRA 1903 sporter, based on the rear sling swivel base and the way it is attached. I don't know that it's the work of G&H, but the sidemount base, barrel band, front sight ramp and hood, forend cap, pistol grip cap, etc. are typical G&H features and the rifle looks very similar to photos in Michael Petrov's book. The folding leaf sights are not necessarily G&H. Also, I don't recall seeing a G&H with forend checkering that doesn't wrap all the way around.

Would love to hear any thoughts on this rifle.

Wonderful bit of history the McKinney!
Would be a tough one to get a mount & period scope for this old girl now, would be worth it though!
Well done
