Well done Sarg; are those NZ bush pigs originating from imported wild boar stock or are they farm pigs turned feral, which body-type has become closer to wild boar with time?

That bushpig has a particularly long snout.

Sarg,

can you express some words on how you hunted it? Some are hunted at night I know? Sometimes with dogs?

From the sound of it you hunted this one in daylight, during a thunderstorm, and stalked it? What right and calibres?

Where, which region and country? In forest, bush a field?

Please tell.

Bushpig were on my desired list on my last and ONLY South African hunt. Not seriously available where I hunted. But probably there as well.

Yes, interested for the details.

Sarg, are you working there or just there for a hunt?

I only have limited data & my cell phone here so posting is a bit tricky, I’ll put some stuff up when I get home in a week or two !

I’m a licensed PH in the Limpopo Province of SA. been working here last 4 years, probably the only Kiwi licensed in Africa ?

Bushpig are very tricky in my area & I have waited weeks in Butternuts & Watermelon fields for them & I have two lol

Also spent 100s of hours waiting for Brown Hyena & I have two, leopards I have found easier & have a few of them, quite the pest around here !

Big Dog I got !

Certainly is a hairy one, compared to the "normal" hyenas one sees in pictures or video.

Yes, he is a Brown Hyena Male & in the Brown Hyena the Male is the larger of the sexes from what I'm told & from what I have seen.

The Spotted Hyena is the one most people know & in that species the Female is the largest, they are larger than the Brown - Striped or the very small Ardwolf which is like a tiny Striped Hyena !

This is a very Big Brown & the skull is bigger than a lot of Spotted Hyena I have seen, he had lost one front foot some how, most likely in a snare as the snare is the scourge of Africa, the other Brown I shot had a snare around its neck when I shot him & the Ardwolf I got this year had a Snare around his neck, I pull up & find 10s of snares a week !

One of my hunters when he hunted in Zim shot two Spotted Hyena both with snares or snare damage around there necks, one with a hole in its throat & water would drain out of that when it drank, Hyena are crazy tough & my friend shot one that had been hit by a Bakkie (South African for Ute/Pick Up) lots of damage all over & half its face torn off, looked like Two Face from Batman & it was doing find health wise & fat !

Yes very tough animal, I'm not sure if hard to kill really as I like to shoot all my Dangerous Game dead right there & not give them a chance, so like to break both (or at least one) shoulders or spine if shooting from above in Rocks or Blind, also nice if I can smack/clip the heart .

I shot both the Hyena with a 30/06 & 180gr PMP & two leopard with same, one with 220gr 30/06 one with 286gr 9.3X62 & one with my 458Win Mag 500gr.

This Hyena was Old & Tough, most animals are scared of Honey Badger/Ratel they are like a African Wolverine, I have waited hundreds of hours in blinds & had on this bait one night seen 7 different Honey Badgers come in, many nights before after sitting 4-5 hours I see a big Dog Hyena coming in, I'm getting very excited now, then off to one side I see 2 Ratel coming from the opposite direction, both put up their tails & make a Rattling noise advancing on the the Hyena, he runs off, bugger !

On this night, I see this guy coming & know its him by the hoping trot he is doing, then again from other direction 3 large Ratel come, I'm thinking "Oh Shit" another wasted night but no this guy stares at the Badgers all lined up in front of him tails up sounding off next to the gut pile & I can see he thinks I got this, been here before lol, he had scar tissue like calluses all over his massive head, I presume from fighting !
