The pedersoli 45/410 cartridge howdah would be a good place to start.

Go for it.

But.....

Why not a sort of easier and Bigger Bore job? A bit more "Howdah-ish"? Like, I've always thot a simple 12 gauge shotgun SBS'd and fitted with a pistol grip would be a really interesting gun to play around with. Load it with 2" 12-bore round ball loads and a 1 ounce charge of BB's would probably take out a Burmese python there in the jungle of your Florida backyard, too.

We're running pretty low on tigers here in Idaho, but with you guys overrun by Burmese pythons, Georgia struggling with snakeheads and pigs now reported headed our way from the Canada/Montana border, I figure it is highly possible a few someones have let slip a pair or three of Siberian cats and in a generation, for sure my grandkids will be facing possible attack on horserides through our ventenata-infested mountains.

Having said that, what we have more and more of right now is another form of vermin, grizzly, which are expanding their range and now in ours, tho the full-load round balls or 3" mag Brennekes might be the preferred load for them.

Anyway, best to be prepared and keep us posted on the progress whichever route you take.

I'm with Rod on this - 12 bore, or at least 20 bore with the appropriate slugs.
A .444 would also work, I guess. Might be fun with 300gr. Speer or Hornady's.

Admittedly I don’t know the exact law or ATF interpretation involved.....but best make sure you don’t run afoul of the BATF by making essentially a sawed off shotgun.

Our BGR association does have a Howdah pistol competition in its rules.
1. Minimum calibre .375
2. Single or double barrels
3. Smooth or ball rifling
4. Minimum muzzle energy 1000 ft.lbs
5. Minimum 300gn bullet weight

Firing sequence - 10 shots at either 25 or 10 yards at a "tiger' target - if possible

So if you have 300gn at 1250fps then you exceed the 1000ft.lbs target & in say a 4-5lb package....it certainly would be lively!

i have an old 10 or 11 gage noname muzzleloader with 4 foot pipes and crappy wood thought might start there and make a concept in black powder and if its two much fun then do a break open in something else thought of a 444 because its large straight walled and barrels are cheap and i load for 44 magnum now.

If you want cheap, the pedersoli is the way to go.

The main problem with converted rifles or shotguns is the curve of the pistol grip, especially with reference to the curve of the lockplates

I have been offered converted pinfire 12 bores as original "Howdah" pistols here in the UK

As they (real "Howdah") pistols are so rare I think it is quite acceptable to make stuff up (where the law allows)

A very large calibre handgun is always interesting

Good luck whichever way you go

Do you or anyone, any branch, actually shoot it?

How many people participate?

If there was a variation where eb .58 was required and steel targets needed to be knocked over, it might satisfy some of the requirements for a handgun greater than .38 in calibre.
