Sailfish
      #333383 - 13/10/19 11:47 AM

Went out wide with my nephew Matt and Bo. Both plenty of experience on the bill fish.Had a great day. Caught my first sail lost another and helped land a couple more.
Day was pretty active so boredom waiting was interrupted with moments of madness when the out riggers popped or a sail was sighted on the teasers.
Heres some pics cheers Mick
Early start , Bo overlooking the spread

My fist sail

Circle where it should be, skirt gar bait

jumping

Bo with a beautiful sail

double hook up

Matt

Matt wrangling one at the boat. None lifted out of the water with good releases and swim offs on all fish

release

That's some achievement Mick getting all of them released OK & swimming off!
But getting them with lures....wow never seen that before.

I had an old work mate who's only recently retired & does the bill fish tournaments here in NQ, always spoke about the sailfish with it's most beautiful colouring and now we've finally witnessed it - thanks Mick, very beautiful photos to say the least!
Certainly one for the bucket list!

Now we need to put Mick's skills of hunting to a real test.

A form of Top End McNab:
- a nice wild boar, or even a water buff bull is acceptable;
- a magpie goose, having to take it in season will make it harder;
and
- a sailfish! Could say a barramundi but that makes it too easy for Mick.

Ha ha. Love seeing all these hunts. Put all us others to shame. Ha ha. Not really but enjoying all the posts and photos. Fishing was the unintended main activity of my first trip to the NT in 1983. Unintended because I thought we were going hunting, the other guys did not but did not tell me. It was a great trip anyway. Since then numerous trips and never really got out fishing properly. Was a real option on Curl's trip as getting onto the property became problematic, and instead fishing might have been the second option. I still have the rods inside my Landcruiser a year later, tied to the ceiling. Perhaps the next trip some barra or whatever, will have to be a true mission objective.

Way out of my comfort zone on the sails. Everything happens quickly, teasers and the lines in. Free spooling the fish on the line point the rod at the fish, slowly engage and wind , weight then ballistic fish. Fights were fast and spectacular.
Credit to Matt and Bo.
Lures were skirted gars prepped and tied to a circle hook. Long waits between fish.
Heres a couple more pics.
rigged bait

teaser

amazing colours
