Elk killing elk.. The rut can be brutal ..

Buddy of mine come across this bull...

Two bull elk fighting.. one got the best of the other as you can see.. I have never seen it go to death before, have watched some serious fights..but not this..

Thanks for posting Ripp. Red deer will sometimes kill another during the rut. When last in Namibia I saw a wounded Sable at the waterhole. Missed the fight near the camp during the night. This sable, going from the puncture marks didn't have long to live.

If a fallow buck is down during the rut, the other bucks will gang up and kill it. Especially if it is a dominant buck. For example a buck which has fought a fence and become entangled, is defenceless. Other bucks will very quickly come and stab it with their antlers or spikes. The spikers are very dangerous.

That wapiti bull looks like another bull has had a go at it while lying on the ground.

I agree--certain the victor took numerous hits on the dead bull once he was down.. saw the same thing on a bison hunt once.. client dropped the bull with a rifle shot..the other bulls went crazy on him..

Moral of the story seems to be 'Even amongst friends and acquaintances, never show weakness"

You're absolutely right Ripp, you summarised well social & family interactions; in the old Roman days, the latin translation for that was 'Vae Victis' (No mercy for those that have been defeated).
