Hello Ann,

I've been bowhunting since 1970, although, since moving to Alaska five years ago, I have done nothing but the mandatory stump shooting sessions. There is a very good state bowhunters association up here, very active. I guess my priorities have changed but I still enjoy the occasional shoot.

I have bowhunted since the early 80s when I was in high school. I never got close enough to a deer back then to even get a shot off. After college I strated to get into bowhunting. It was the first time that I realized that skill in the set up and stand placement was the key to taking game on a regular basis. This mental game of trying to firure out where when and why a buck will be using a certain trail or area is the challenge that I love about bow hunting. I also got ahold of a REALLY great book on hunting whitetails by Greg Miller called "Aggresive whitetail Hunting". This book really turned the light on for me and made me understand that bucks behave differently than does and thet use separate trails for much of the year. Since reading that book in the early 90s I have been fourtunate enough to take a whitetail buck and several does every year. A few even made the Pope & Young record book. The woods are also less crowded during the archery season and it is easier to hunt deer on their own terms.

I started when I was about 12 (about 25 years ago).

Used a simple target recurve bow and many shot trees, tin cans, ice cream tins and shot as far as a I could over the tall gums trees into a paddock on the other side.

Also played that "game" where you shoot the arrow straight up and watched it as it came down and dodged if necessary. Really bright, aye?

Shot quite a few pigeons roosting in the hay shed - broke more arrows than recovered pigeons. An occasional rabbit too.

Camoflaged the original light weight bow with paint for some reason but not the larger one.

Have also tried to hunt roos with one. But they are much more sporting with a bow than a rifle and almost always spot you, hopping off another 200 metres so you rarely get within 100 metres of one. Easy with a rifle but frustrating with a bow.

Goats and pigs are easier to approach closely than roos.

Wouldn't consider hunting deer with one at the moment, though on many hunts especially towards the middle of the day, one does chance apon a sleeping deer and can get within a few metres. However these would only be taken for meat, as the trophy animals are never that easy. I think a good bowhunted trophy deer is truly a hard worked for trophy.

Haven't tried to bowhunt for a long time, but with a forum like this it does whet the appetite!

PS I think it would be great to hunt warthog with a bow. In the high grass while tracking other game, BigFive and I routinely walked right up to dozing warties who are very comical to watch.

I first started hunting with a bow in 1971. I was introduced to it by a co-worker. My friend loaned me one of his bows to start with. It was a steel recurve, takedown bow with 100# pull. What a beast! I did learn to shoot it rather well however. My first season, I stalked up on a feeding doe and took her with a clean, high lung shot from 31 paces, using the old Bear Broadhead. That year, for Christmas, my girfriend presented me with a Browning recurve that had a 45# draw weight. The following deer season saw me down a 5pt. Whitetail with it. Then in 1975, I bought an Oneida Eagle. It's kind of a cross between a recurve and a compound bow. Its draw is set at 64 pounds. It was a very lucky bow for me. With it I've taken several nice Whitetail bucks, including a nice 10 pointer, and an 11 pointer, along with a Black Bear here in my home state of Pennsylvania, and several Caribou. Unfortunately, I can no longer shoot a bow. I injured my shoulder somehow, and can no longer draw a bow. I've been to several specialists, and I've had all the tests done, and nothing shows up as to what is causing the shoulder pain. It's just there, and nothing helps it At least I can still hunt with a rifle though.
