.256 Gibbs Magnum Mannlicher at Canadian auction. May be a takedown too.

That is a very nice and complete example!
Your suspicion is correct, it is a takedown as well.

That is a nice rifle. But it looks to me as if it has a repair at the wrist. Has it been broken, I wonder?

I have emailed the auction to inquire about any possible repaired crack.

By the way, this auction is in Canada and the prices are in Canadian dollars (.75 US), so $2500 (Can.) is approx. $1900(US).

Didn't notice that at first, but appears the stock was broken right off, through the wrist.

Certainly a very nice rifle, I particularly like the scope mounts and the open sights.

Could be a break but I'm not sure that's a crack.
Could be marred checkering from having a zip tie or cable lock routed through the trigger guard and around the wrist too tightly.
I've seen checkering boogered up by this at gun shows.

This seems likely to me...however I am waiting to hear back from the auction.

Does anyone have an idea how the takedown feature might work?

Normally, on a takedown Mannlicher, the front action screw is backed out an the barrel can be unscrewed.

Hopefully, it is only marred checkering. Concerning the take-down feature, a photo of the underside of the rifle would be very enlightening.

The rifle discussed here was built on a Mannlicher Schönauer 'Greek' action (modified to take .256 Gibbs) and is of a takedown system typical of Gibbs, as discussed in this thread: Gibbs Takedown MS

More about the 'Greek' MS and British sporting arms built from them: Y1903

The Steyr built Mannlicher Schönauer takedown models of M1900, M1903, M1905, M1908, M1910 were only chambered to their model specific proprietary cartridges and were of this design, similar to takedown rifles of Westley Richards:

Looks broken right through the wrist cleanly and glued back together at one time. Maybe some reinforcement inside there, maybe not.
The auction clearly states "..The wrist has been professionally repaired.."

Nice rifle inspite of the repair, That issue could be redone and hidden so as not to be seen at all.

I have a similar 256 Gibbs Magnum on a 1903 M/S but the wood is plain, no grip cap, no front sight cover, it's not a TD and doesn't have anywhere near the condition this one does.
Mine does have an Aldis Bros 'scope in QD 'Vienna" (?) style mounts and the multi leaf rear bbl sight.
Exc bore. Shoots very nicely.
I make brass from 8x57MAuser using shortened 6.5 Swede dies and a .303 FL die to narrow the shoulder dia of the case which it needs.
The rifle laid on a gunshow table unloved for a Sat and 1/2 day Sunday looking for a buyer @ $250 IIRC till I spotted it. Couldn't believe my luck. I didn't even kick the tires.

Note that the auction description statement, "The wrist has been professionally repaired" is a new addition. It did not appear in the original auction description. It only appeared after I inquired whether or not the wrist had been repaired.

OK. it still looks like it was broken right through & then repaired just by looking at the pics..
They should have stated that up front of course.

I don't know about you fellows, but for me, any major stock crack, no matter how well repaired, seriously reduces my interest in a firearm.

Depends on where it happened, if it was a break in the field while hunting it sort of adds to the history of the gun, but if it was broken in the post it does spoil the gun somewhat. I realise that it would be difficult to tell however.

I know that I have lost interest in owning this rifle. And I don't like the fact that the auction orginally did not mention the crack in their description.

It went for $2,500.00 (CAD) + 375.00 buyer's premium. + applicable fees & taxes. So the total will be well over $3000. (CAD)...that's approx. $2300. (US)....I would guess the final total cost will be close to $2500 (US).

I love the styling of that rifle.

So that is a Greek Steyr / Mannlicher action?

What is the .256 Gibbs Magnum cartridge? How does it differ fro other .256 Cartridges such as the 6.5x54 M-S / 6.5x53R and 6.5x54 Mauser?

Will have a look at the takedown system and link mentioned.

The stampings on the receiver identify it as such. It is marked 'Steyr 19xx' rather than 'Oesterr Waffenbr. Ges. Steyr' and has a military designation marked on the bridge rather than the commercial model number.

Many makers who made sporting arms of the 'Greek MS' removed these markings, this one did not.

Rocky Gibbs developed several wildcats based on the full length .30'06 case with minimum body taper, sharp shoulder, and very short neck.

I would say Rocky Gibbs is a very different deal from Gibbs Rifle Company UK ?

His cases usually had slightly less taper than Ackley's I think.

Yes - Rocky Gibbs is/was not the UK gun maker, but a "wild-cater" in the USA.
