Nasty - looked to me they shot too late. I'd have planted that one in the forehead while it was looking straight at me - BEFORE it attacked. I expect Oliver had post-attack infections. Appeared the lion was stiff legged/paralyzed before the supposed finishing shot.

Rifles were not at the ready and left it way late to nail it. Daryl I agree, old Oliver would have had post attack infections. I do not know what infection control they had back then but it wouldn't be the first time whisky poured into the wounds was used, if they did that.
PH I hunted with said of lion and leopard. For every second a leopard is on you it is 10 stitches and he will normally bounce onto the next person, dog. The lion will kill you. The leopard rakes with its claws the lion does not, it just digs them in and holds on. If a lion is charging you are better off kneeling so you are shooting straight at the cat and not an angling shot that need lead. If the lion is looking straight at you with head up, aim no higher then the eyes.

They obviously wanted a lion charge for the film.
The sport of lion charging, particularly against a man on horse used to be somewhat popular in East Africa.
