Hi,

I believe this project is still ongoing, so no news yet.

Yes, coming along, but it will be a big one. A few loose ends to wrap up and hope to publish by end of this year.

Yes, another year has come and gone. Due to several personal commitments and obligations, my work to finish the book in 2017 was delayed. But there is a bright side: the total number of Lee Speeds for which I have gathered data passed the 700 mark this year, and even better, I was able to access the sales ledgers of several gunmakers and noted information on all the Lee Speeds sold. This has allowed me to match sales data (date, configuration, price, owner, special features, manufacturing source) for a number of rifles that I have examined. This allowed me to see which particular variations were available at definite dates---more accurate than relying on catalogues. So, it was a big step forward and the book will be better for it.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words of encouragement. There is no way this project could have come this far if it wasn't for the enthusiasm, support, and cooperation from all of you worldwide. I am continually amazed at the generosity shown to me and my research.

As for price, it all depends where I choose to have the printing done, and how many copies I have printed. I edited and designed a gun book a few years ago that the author chose to have printed abroad to keep costs down. That seems to be the trend nowadays. On the other hand, Kirton's book on Fraser was recently published and printed in the United States and still priced under $100. You guys tell me...would you pay an extra USD $20.00 per copy for a book that was printed in a (relatively) free country? Or is cost the bottom line for you?

I want to keep the price down to approx US $80.00 and no higher than $100. It cannot be lower than that if I keep it to a minimum of 224 full-color pages (hardcover). I certainly have enough material to fill 336 pages if I can swing it. How much material is superfluous even if interesting? These are the decisions to make in the "final cut."

In any case, if anyone is wondering, there's not much profit in books unless they have "Harry Potter" in the title. I know too many authors who have "lost their shirts" in publishing specialty gun books. The best I can hope for is to break even and recoup some of the research costs incurred over the past nine (!) years.

Some people are weird about costs....They won't balk at spending $6000 on a British express rifle, but $100 for a well-researched and well-designed book on the same rifle will cause their arms to shrink suddenly, unable to reach their wallet. (I have a friend who owns a large and expensive collection of modern defensive handguns but refused to attend a pistol class from the top instructor in the US because the 40-hour class cost (gasp) $800!) To each his own.

There are a few standards that I won't compromise on. The book WILL have a detailed index, and full footnotes. The latter is too seldom seen in gun books. I may have to put the footnotes in microscopic type but they will be there. After a book is published, there is no need to be secretive about sources. The reason is that future researchers MUST be able to verify my work, and build on it in the future.

Yeah - possibly - weird people all around - not likely being here at NE but then, I don't know you.

I think the serious collectors or like me wanttobes will jump at this. Bigger, brighter and more information is what I vote for and I promise I will order the first day I hear it is available. I have been waiting for this book and maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I believe in "buy a gun, buy a book" if it is a historic or military arm that there is books on it. Plus some of the limited runs increase better than guns do. Not that I have plans on selling any.

The update is that I am making a research visit to the UK at the end of this year to search a few archives and confirm (I hope) a few theories, and generally wrap things up, research-wise. I will then revise the last draft and start the design and layout.

In the meantime, there is something that might tide you over... I just finished a lengthy research article on the "Origins and Development of the .375 Nitro Express Lee-Speed Sporting Rifle." It's a historical piece rather than a technical treatise or a reference guide, but I believe it is the most that has so far been written on the topic. Should be in print by Christmas time. I will make sure to blow the horns here as soon as it is available.

In the meantime, "keep those cards and letters coming".... can't do it without the help, insight, and generosity of the Nitro folks here. If there are things you definitely want to see in the book, let me know.

I am very anxious to see both your Lee Speed book, and the .375 treatise.

I am most willing to pay a premium for a good gun book (please sign me up for a copy of each, BTW).
Kirton's Fraser book was a huge disappointment from the photography standpoint. I would have gladly
paid an extra $50 for a book that did not look like a cheap newspaper.

No, the book is not ready yet...it's progressing nicely, but I keep uncovering more stuff.

However, as I mentioned some time ago, an "appetizer" is now available, to partially satisfy those of you who are fans of the .375 Nitro. The article titled "Origins and Development of the .375 Nitro Express Lee-Speed Sporting Rifle" was published in the HBSA Journal (Vo.4, No.10) last December, but it has just become available to non-members as an inexpensive digital download:

http://www.hbsa-uk.org/knowledge-and-research/journal-summaries/hbsa-journal-volume-4-2009---2018

The download is money well-spent....the HBSA is a good cause.

The book chapter on the .375 will be more definitive (the article contains some speculation and outlines more of the detective work), but the article offers the kind of info you'll see in the book on a great many topics.

I sent off the article to the HBSA just before I left for the UK, where I uncovered a bit more on the .375, and confirmed what the article hypothesizes: it was C.W. Andrews who introduced the .375 Lee-Speed, but it was in 1905, not 1906. Off by one year or less...not too bad, considering what I had to work with.
