Thanks for posting Homer. Tahr most certainly are King of the Mountains. Some of the things I have seen them doing in what look to be impossible places to be is unbelievable.

I agree, very good indeed.
That method of hunting (climbing) is way behind me now.

I wish I'd done that twenty five years ago! Planned to. Went for a red stag and got one. Wanted to go back for chamois and tahr.

Great video.Well done to the guys making it and also the hunt. Wonderful to see a free range wild hunt. Not a hunt behind wire in a pen. The way guys used to do it for decades.

I remember before the days of "hunting choppers" even the ride up to the hut in a chopper was absent. A pre-dawn climb up the mountain was the start of it. I remember looking at those mountains from the bottom and think, My God, Ffff. A long way up.

One has to be fit. So easy to do some damage with a miss step. Even then an accident can happen.

The hunt is the trophy, big horns are just an added benefit.

Thanks Homer for posting.

G'Day Fella's,

Pleased to see you blokes enjoyed this video.

FYI, wild and free Tahr hunting, is the single hardest work I have ever done (x 3, + a few missed shots)!
But once you get that fit, it is more of a psychological thing, but it's still Bloody Hard Yakka (Hard Work). Mind you, once you get up into the country where the Bull's are, WOW ......... what an additional reward, that is as well.

FYI, The East Coast of the NZ's Southern Alps, is easier to hunt (wild and free animals), than the West Coast.
It's just that the West Coast ("The Coast"), seems to produce more longer and heavier heads.

Yes - to be able to do that again. When I got home from guiding in 1977, late Sept, I was in pretty good shape & only 37 yrs. old. Grabbed some ammo and my peep-sighted .458 and went up Hudson's bay Mountain in Smithers and shot some marmots for their meat and oil(patch lube & boot waterproofing). 1/2 dozen big hoary marmots in my Tapper Nelson's pack with 'dressed' marmots and went back down to home. THAT was a long time ago.

My second Tahr hunt. We were higher the day before and a chopper flew a thousand or so feet below us on the way up the valley to rescue some Govt people that got stranded due to a blizzard the day before that.

Ripp, do not hesitate in undertaking a Wild and Free Tahr hunt, in NZ mate.
You just need to prepare for it, as it can be one of the toughest hunts available.
Just remember, "Legs and Lungs"!

Also please remember, I have a total of 11 seperate spinal injuries, and have hunted these same mountains , and spent around 6 weeks doing it over the years (with a local guide, PC).
I shot three Tahr and one Chamois, during this time (and missed a few also .........).
It is as much Psychological as it is Physical, so prepare more than you expect you will need to, and then some more.
You will enjoy the experience, a whole lot more.

Now, go get em Cobber!

I will take your advice.. and prepare ..

The steepest mtns I have ever been in was in Azerbaijan a few years back..hunting for Tur.. incredibly steep..hard to ever rest on the side without feeling you were going to start rolling over.. views were incredible however and would do it again if given the chance..
