English Stalking Rifle Steyr .256 Mannlicher model 1892

Classic Victorian-era English Stalking Rifle on a Mannlicher model 1892 action produced by Waffenfabrik-Gesellschaft in Steyr in 1893. Slim 26" barrel chambered for the .256 Mannlicher or 6.5x53R, the rimmed version of the 6.5x54 M-S with which it shares performance. Barrel is marked: "SHOT & REGULATED BY ARMY & NAVY. C. S. L. LONDON." Platinum lined express rear sight with one standing and two folding leaves. Rare fold-down front sight hood (locks in place), Classic English straight grip stock. Buffalo horn forend cap. Wood "buttplate" is carved from stock. English hook type sling rings. Blue is approx. 90%. Wood finish appears original. Checkering is in good condition. Various Victorian English proofmarks. All original. Overall very good condition. Bore is good. Comes with clips and brass.


The Army and Navy Co-Operative Society Ltd was formed in 1871 by British Army and Naval officers to supply articles of general use to society members at the lowest prices. The first store opened in 1872 in London. By 1873, the store offered a gun department. Membership was restricted to officers, non-commissioned officers and their families. (Friends could join by introduction and officials from the civil service could also join.) The Society grew to be a very large with depots at important army bases and naval ports. A store was opened in Bombay in 1891 and Calcutta in 1901.The Society had a large annual illustrated catalogue.

The front sight is a Cole's Patent, I believe.
