What do you consider to be the most memorable hunt you've undertaken in North America, and why?

Mike,

I've hunted NA extensively and had some great hunts for moose, bear, elk, etc., but the most memorable was a Canadian whitetail hunt. I had lived in Canada for four years and friends had found the sheds of a huge buck two years in a row. I found a scrape line and followed it along a ridge and found an area with an enormous primary scrape. It was way back in an area and I camped about half way in for a few days. About 4:30P, on the third day I was sitting in a deadfall watching two small bucks chasing a doe around(read not paying attention) And caught movement out of the corner of my eye...........knew I was busted. The buck, on the scrape, 30yds. broke into the bush out of sight down a trail that crossed in front of me at 50yds. I shot at him with the muzzleloader and missed...........clean miss. I saw him again after the regular rifle season was done around the first week in Dec.
Didn't find his sheds that season. The sheds from the previous two seasons, given a modest 16" spread, scored 186 & change, and 188 & change. I think of him often.

Joe

Ovis-great story-thanks. Too bad you didn't connect with that monster though. My most memorable hunt occured back in the early '80s up in the Yukon Territories Olgive Mountains. A friend of mine and I booked a 14 day Dall Sheep hunt, and it was the last hunt of the season, as we wanted the ram's hair to be prime. Anyway, after flying into base camp, and spending the night in a nice log cabin, my friend and I along with our guides, loaded up a pack string of horses and set out for a 6 hour trip up the Tatundik River where we set up a spike camp. The next morning we started hunting, with Larry and his guide heading up one basin, and my guide and I heading up another. The hunting Gods were smiling on us that day, as we both took nice rams that were better than a full curl. The next morning we broke camp after capeing out the heads, and headed back to base camp where we were going to hunt for moose. I was the last person in the pack string, when we came around a bend in the river. Just then, a rather large Grizzly Bear sauntered out of the woods. When I saw this, I reached into my saddle bags to dig out my Super 8 (remember them) movie camera to get some footage of the bear. About that time, the bear stood up on his hind legs, and when it did, my horse saw him for the first time, and threw a coniption fit! It started bucking, and threw me off into the middle of the river. The air temperature was around 35F., and the water around freezing as well. The horse took off down river to catch up with the pack string, and there I am in the middle of the river with a Grizzly standing up on its hind legs looking at me from around 40 yards away. The bear then swapped ends, and ran off into the forest. A minute or so later, the guides and my friend came back to see what happened to me, because my horse passed them at a full gallop headed back to base camp. Of course my buddy had to get his camera out and get movies of me standing in the middle of the river, soaking wet. We unloaded my gear from one of the pack horses, and I was able to change into dry clothes before starting the long walk back to camp. About 2 hours later, the outfitter appeared coming up the river, as he got really concerned when my horse came running back to camp minus its rider. Fortunately, he brought another horse with him so I didn't have to walk all the way back.

I have only hunted in Arizona, California and Texas. I have never hunted moose and the like so I can only go on what I have done. I would be hard pressed to have just one most memorable hunt to say the least.

I was taught how to hunt, track, camp and care for game by my grandfather. He instilled in me that all the animals that I take are trophies regardless of the size of its horns or how big its body was. To treat the animals any less would be disrespectful of the animal and the life that I had ended.

We had many a hunt together and to this day I wish he could be with me again. I have him with me at least through what he taught and gave me, whether it’s hunting or just living. He passed at the age of 93 a few years back and I still think of the hunts and our time together. My grandmother would always say that when the two of us were together things became a comedy of errors. I will you give an example of one of many of these that had happened with us.

This was back in 1987 or so and is about a javelina hunt undertaken on a bet with my grandfather. I had gone out on opening day with my uncles and other family members to hunt Box Canyon for javelina. I at this time still hadn’t shaken the affliction we all know as buck fever. I was to take one side of a deep gorge and still hunt it to the next saddle and my family would do like wise on the other side.

I had maybe walked about and hour when I spotted a small herd , 8 to 10 animals not more than 80 yards from me. Needless to say I couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn that day. My family managed to take a couple later in the day.

The hunt wore on and everyone who had a tag had managed to fill theirs. Man was I feeling bad. The last day of the hunt rolled around and I just gave up. I couldn’t see anyway of getting a javelina and just ignored the alarm clock

It was around 8 am when my grandfather came to me and said that if I was willing he would find me a “pig”. I said it was no use and wasn’t worth the effort as I had blown my chance. Well he just stared at me for the longest time and finally stated that he would bet me $10.00 that I would get one. My part of the bet was that when I did get one that I would have to give him the money for a bottle of Canadian mist and a bottle of Mogen David. I agreed and off we went.

We had driven to an area that we had hunted previously and started to still hunt some rolling hills and greasewood thickets. Now this whole time I am positive of the waste of time this would be and I really wasn’t giving this my utmost attention. We had covered close to 2-2 1/2 miles when up pops in front of me two big old boars. I was dumbstruck, I just stood there staring, heck I didn’t even lift my rifle to my shoulder. My grand father was telling me to shoot so he says, I didn’t here it. The javelina just trotted off with me standing there with my jaw on the ground. Needless to say my grandfather wasn’t too happy and it didn’t take long for the kick in the pants I got to wake me up

Well once I got my head cleared I took off in the direction the”pigs” went but I never did find them. I did manage to kick a smaller one off its bed and managed to redeem myself to a degree. My grandfather was all smiles when we met back up even though he had to jumpstart me so to speak. Needless to say when we got back to town I paid up, after all he had lived up to his end of the bet. We had many a time such as this and there isn’t a one of I would do over in any way.

Sorry this was so long winded. Thanks for your time.

coues-that was one of the neatest stories I've heard in a long, long time. Thanks for making my day. Those are the kind of memories we'll carry with us forever. No one in my family hunted, so I never had the types of opportunities to hunt with my father or grand fathers. You're quite fortunate to have had that chance.

Thanks,
I was worried that I went a bit long in the telling. I have so many stories like this. Strange, silly and bizarre at times lol.

Don't worry about the length of the story. After all, everyone knows that you can't get the proverbial 10 pounds of s... in a 5 pound bag. Keep those stories coming.

John, I'm with you. You can't tell a story in 10 words eh?
