Cheap? Yes, it is, a Sable hunt in Zim or Zambia is about 10k more. I shot a Sable in the Forest Area in Zim one year ago tomorrow aannnnd they tell me my trophies are finally shipping tomorrow.

I have never done a ranch hunt in South Africa, so I can't really comment on fenced hunting. Personally, I'm willing to pay the extra to hunt an area that is still wild, I enjoy dodging the elephants and the occasional Lion when in the field.

Sable are "exotic" to South Africa and usually very high priced compared to say Zim or Zambia. Perhaps Mozambique as well.

I wonder what the catalyst is for the relative cheaper price?

Bans of trophy importations being forecasted in many countries around the world?

Perhaps an end of season unsold special?

eg UK, perhaps others from memory. Will have to have a look.

BTW Sable are on my wanted list of unfilled African antelope.

My interest now is more for more buffalo, cow elephant, and of course fantasy lion and leopard.

I love taking an impala, zebra and warthog any trip.

Bushpig are way up there for a specialised hunt.

And the small antelope. I want a sub-wall with them. Should have taken more on previous trips. Perhaps I can take a 6.5 especially for them.

Nyala is another on my bucket list. Only have taken one kudu, so another would be nice.

The list gets longer and longer ...

Absolutely no comparison between some pokey little ranch and a real wild hunting area. Unless the fenced in area is so big you never see the fences .. like one area I hunted in Zim, was five properties combined and had elephant and black rhino, which one could and did bump into.

On the other hand the ranches can be harder hunting, as the game is often so shot at, they run at the slightest provocations and keep running until the bump into a fence. South Africa is often overgrown with thorn bush/jess, and annoying to hunt in.

But they also often KNOW exactly what animals are in their fenced area, one hartebeest left, three impala rams, one sable etc. Until they buy more at auction for next years season ...

So the hunting on a ranch is not necessarily easy, especially if at the end of the season, not the beginning. But there is nothing like the wild places. I agree completely. For the sake of putting something on the wall, available in the wild elsewhere, I couldn't be bothered to hunt a teeny weeny pretend ranch again.

Sable prices have tumbled dramatically in South Africa over the last year or two. There are literally tens of thousands of them all over SA and many farmers have surplus stock that they need to get rid of or watch them die from the drought affecting many parts of SA or from old age. The prices will probably stay stable or even go down a wee bit in the near future.

This is the result of game breeding. Farmers have managed to breed sable, buffalo, etc on a large scale and the numbers of these species have, as a result, climbed dramatically.

The next dramatic price drop will probably be for buffalo, and for exactly the same reason.

Good news! May have to take back all I said about the tiny ranches that are often park of the SAf scene.

I can't afford a Sable from Zambia.

Such lovely animals. First time I saw them was in the distance with other game at a waterhole in Botswana in 1988.

And by the way, many of the ranch hunts in SA can be extremely challenging and difficult, and not necessarily because the game have been shot to pieces. Many properties are huge, and the terrain in many areas can be very broken, making hunting and recovery very difficult. I'm not saying it's the same as hunting a huge unfenced block somewhere else but many have a big misconception about hunting in SA.

And also, sable were endemic to parts of SA. They still occur in Kruger National Park where they have been since forever, along with tsessebe and Lichtenstein hartebeest.

AGree--one of the most beautiful antelope species in the world.. My goal when I started hunting Africa, other than the big stuff was to get a sable and roan.. two of my most prized trophies..

Back in 1972, when I spent three weeks hunting in Tanzania, my bag included:
2 Elephant
5 Buffalo
1 Lion
1 Leopard
1 Sable
1 Kudu
2 Impala
2 Hartebeest
3 Wildebeest
4 Zebra
2 Warthogs and
2 Permits (including one for my photographer friend, who confined his shooting to his Nikon)

The total came to 19,220.-- Tanzanian shillings or, at the rate of 6.999 shillings to the dollar, $2746. The sable was 900,-- Tanzanian shillings or $128.59.

Those were the "good old days"!

I would guess it would be several hundred thousand for the Tanzanian game bag of 1972 today. My guess at least $250,000.

One reason such a safari is beyond most mortals bank accounts today. Tanzania in general is. A reason a lot of us hunt or have hunted Zimbabwe, Mozambique for bigger game, and Namibia and South Africa for plains game.

Someone please invent a time machine ...

But as I have said in the past, the invention of the passenger airplane and affordable air fares changed African safaris. For the "common man". In the "golden years" yes, game bags were relatively cheaper and far more filled with numbers and species of game animals. BUT a man (or woman) had to board a ship, pay for all the "board" of an extneded sea voyage, then the weeks in country, and then the extended voyage back. Usually a minimum of three months. For a working man, impossible to take off three months off work. Would mean quitting your job, retirement. For a common bloke, about the only way was to head over there to look for work. Perhaps in the safari industry itself.

On the other hand, one COULD make a living, even savings, from the hunting industry. John Dawkins in his book writes about hunting for ivory as a living. Even if a game licence only included two or four elephants, it seems to have been common practice for people, eg Indians, to take out a licence, and need sub-contract it to people such as Dawkins for a share of the ivory sale. A successful hunter could make a living and also substantial savings to bring home to retire on.

Nowadays a short hunt can be done in less than 10 days including travel. And for many plains game hunt, not out of the reach of most hunters, if they save and make the effort to do it. And well worth doing at least once on a persons life.

After all just ignore the marketing hype, not buy three dozen "essential" new rifles and brand new super duper calibres/cartridges, that old .30-06 will still do it all for plains game.

Sable don't wander very far from water. If South Africa is having a drought, the Sable will perish very quickly.

My main hunting buddy is headed to South in a few weeks for a Sable and Roan hunt.. high trophy quality.. $7200. total... that is incredibly cheap .. I paid over $5000 just for a sable back in 2005.. shot my roan in Cameroon in 2017-- honestly don't remember the cost, was actually on a Lord Derby hunt at the time, but know is was less than $4000..

Plains game species are really inexpensive right now all over S Africa..and some of Namibia.. I did hear Namibia is in the middle of a very bad drought right now..

To me, a free range hunt in Zimbaawe, Zambia or Mozambique for sable and a free range hunt for roan in Cameroon, is worth ten even twenty times the shooting of a pen raised high fenced game shoot for a wall hanger in South Africa.

Either can be hunt, but one is more a legitimate and real experience and the other not so much. Have done both. I know which I prefer. having said that, in the past often the pen raised high fence hunt was more expensive.

As for roan and sable in South Africa, nah, not for me. Rather hunt them in say Mozambique.
