Had a 16 double for a while. Nice good shooting gun. I did not feel under-gunned, but quite well "balanced" for my birding. I did not shoot migratory birds with it. It worked well for me, but a 20 did as well for what I used it.
I would have preferred a 28 for my upland, I think, but the 16 worked just fine. My 20 bore Ithica SA was a good gun, but seemed to recoil out of proportion to it's ballistics.
The 20 bore SKB was a nice gun, but was poorly regulated, so I dumped it.
The 28 I tried was a Ruger O/U & was quite delightful to shoot birds with.

I have been using a 16 gauge Fox from the early 40s I believe..almost exclusively for the past 10 years for upland game..really like the 16..have used 12's most of my life..switched to 20s for a while..but prefer the 16..

They all work, just what I prefer..

I have two 16s A Webley 700 1957 production ,like brand new and an American Kingsland,a bit of a clunker but it fits well so I shoot it occasionally.
My go to gun is my William Powell 12g followed by the Webley 16g. The Webley can do nearly everything the Powell can do by varying the shells that you use.
I laid in several thousand shells when and where ever I could find them in 2 1/2 & 2 3/4 and all shot sizes plus reloading components so I'm ok for quite a while.

Smart to lay in lots of ammo, no matter what it is..

In this area, the 16 gauge has had a bit of a resurgence.. 16 gauge are readily available in most gun shops.. at least where I shop..

hundred years ago the sweet 16 was the most used shotgun caliber in europe. maybe this changed after ww 2. if you compare the 16 ga action with a 12 ga action you will understand that I prefer the 16 any day. most gunwriter doing the best to write down the 16 g in the last decades but it survive and have a slow but steady comback.

Ripp,
thanks for sharing, good article!

Lancaster,
I have seen this trend in my own family, in then Western Germany in the last 50 yearss:
Granddad was strictly a 16 gauge man, used both in side-by-side doubles and combination guns.
My father had some interest in clay shooting and soon settled for 12 gauge over-unders.

At that time "payload" was limited to 36 gram - 1 1/4 ounces of shot in most competitions, so a heavy 12 gauge made sense.

Nowadays classic game shooting is history in Germany, and so are the old-time game shots (Granddad hardly ever shot at a clay target!) and the 16 gauge.

Today we shoot mostly clays with a 12 gauge - the irony is that max. shot charges in competitions are now set to 24 grams or 28 grams (7/8 or 1 ounce) - which would be better suited to 16 or even 20 gauge....

I started out with a 16 gauge side-by-side from Granddad, but switched to a 12 gauge O/U soon.
This worked fine for me, but now I might be tempted again with a handy 16 gauge shotgun!
And anyway for combination guns, IMO there is no other choice than a 16 shotgun barrel

Gentlemen,

I feel very comfortable in this community, I am also a 16 gauge fan!

I once used a Browning Auto 5 with a shortened barrel (choke completely removed) in 16 gauge, this gun is very comfortable to carry and even with my shooting un-skills bagged two ducks with it!

A british company offers bismuth shot cartridges in 16 gauge for hunting near water/creeks/rivers, and I try to stock these cartridges.

regards
Rolf

this trap shoting thing was realy the turning point in the history of the 16 ga. anyway, this makes high quality 16 ga guns, sometimes with alot of handcraft in it, inexpensive.
our benefit!
