1910 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Shooting Brake (Shooting Car)

1910 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Shooting Brake (Shooting Car)

A "shooting brake" is a term for a vehicle style which orienated in the 18th Century for a vehicle to carry shooting parties and their equipment and game. Originally a cart or buggy, and from the term "brake" for breaking in horses, it was later used for motorised vehicles.

This excellent example of a shooting brake is housed at the Louwman Museum in Den Haag, in the Netherlands. Thanks to online friend Johan Kurver for the photographs.

This Rolls Royce Silver Ghost shooting brake from 1910, the high period of this style of vehicle was pre-WW1, reflects the wealth of the nobility and great land owners of the period. Gun boxes sit over the rear mudguards, the roof rack was used to transport game - lets not hear any more complaints about game photographed on a vehicle being disrespectful now (!) - and it has a stag's head as a radiator mascot.

Landowner John Charles Montagu-Douglas-Scott (now there's a mouthful), the seventh Duke of Buccleuch, and ninth Duke of Queensberry (I hope he shot ethically with that title!) and descendent of monarchs commissioned this RR in 1910. Bodywork was made by HM the King, Croall and Croall in Kelso, Scotland.

Powered by a RR six cylinder 40/50HP engine, the twelfth example of the model was finished in silver paint and named "Silver Ghost". Due to its colour and quietness of operation.

Looks like a beautifull Gordon Setter in the picture.
Nice "car" too. Likely out of my price range.

A 1965 Ferrari Shooting Brake: Ferrari

A 1975 Ferrari: Ferrari 365

Aston Martin... : Aston

A couple of Rolls Royce:

Yes, it's Texas.

Bentley: Bentley

More of the 1965 Ferrari 350 GT 2+2: 2+2

A 1929 Rolls: 29 Rolls

While not a Shooting Brake per se , here's a dandy 1925 RR 'Tiger Car', complete with small naval gun and tag along Bira Gun (sort of a Nepalese Gattling knock off): Field & Stream RR Tiger Car

It seems that the definition of a 'shooting brake' has morphed over time from its original meaning to that of a sports car or coupe that has been styled as a 'wagon'. Here is one that was built to the original definition: Sbarro

They also built this beast of a Cadillac:Sbarro TAG

Hah and NE beat Field & Stream by a month!

Featured direct, with permission from the auction house.

I remember also getting contacted by UK media and newspapers wanting to use the photos featured on the NE forums. I passed them on to the auction house.

A discussion thread is linked on the ezine thread.

A cannon with a shooting car would be quite cool as well.

A howdah pistol, ready for the tiger on the bonnet perhaps?

The Tiger Car as presented tows a rare carriage-mounted Bira .450 caliber hand-cranked machine gun, once considered suitable for hunting Bengal tigers.

Now that is a properly resourced hunting car.

That muzzleloading Howdah pistol is loverly, likely 12 bore.
Would be nice to see better pictures of that bore SxS hammer gun on the floor as well.
Of course, this is about the 'rides'.
