Home from the shop a quick clean and out to the local swamp. Pouring rain on arrival so waited for it to stop. well sort of, it slowed so I decided to do a quick lap of a few bedding spots I know of.
About a 1.5km's in I found some real fresh sign and quickly worked out which way they were going. Started checking all the good bedding spots and heard a growl. Growling continued as I moved towards the noise. It was going to be close the wind was real iffy. Decided the first one I found was going to get it.
It all happened fast spotted a black shape at 2m rifle up and one in the butt of the ear, under recoil the rifle went onto the next that stood up and flattened it. The mob broke into the long grass and no more shots offered.
Looked around for a straggler and only found a piglet that Styer rounded up.
Checked out the two on the ground, both sows.
Rifle Merkel 140AE 450-400 3 " Hornady DGX 400gr
Feels good in the hand and is a good weight, balances and handles very well great to carry. Recoil well I didn't even notice it and the triggers broke clean. Time will tell as it gets used on game this year.
Regulated with Hornady DGX and previous owner supplied woodleigh regulation loads. Group supplied was what sealed the deal.
Pretty impressed with the finish of the rifle. Heres a few pics cheers Mick

Good on you Mick, nice pigs and a very nice rifle, great cartridge as well and very popular down here at BGRC. Quite a number of chaps have taken theirs to Africa with one even used to take an elephant. At $200 per box reloading is definitely the order of the day. Looking forward to see how the Woodleighs look and perform. Well done.

Bloody hell Mick, another one!

You will become one of my great gun owning hereos soon.

A Merkel like that, second hand is one of the affordable and very usuable double rifles on the market. And at new price not overly unaffordable either.

Good hunting mate. Keep at it. But get reloading.

Good show Mick!!! You walk the talk and have the game pics to prove it!

I see your Merkel is also set up with bases to accommodate the Recknagle turn-in scope mounts. Handy feature if one is ever inclined toward optics. Nice rifle, and you're putting it to good use and doing with it what it was intended for. Lovely bush gun, short, well balanced, loads of power on tap, and a pleasure to carry and shoot!!!!

Mick, dies are available from CH4D with shell holder #456 as well as form Hornady (546421) with shell holder #25.

There are actually some available on Ebay in Australia at the moment

Shell holder #25

Hope this helps.

Mick,

If it regulates with your load and also factory ammo well without any scope, I would be very intrigued to see and read what the results are if you decide to put a scope on it oneday.

In theory the group should widen a small amount. But would be interesting to see what happens. Hopefully shoots good regulation groups with and without a scope.

If you can, can you post a photo of the regulation group it shoots now. Thanks.
