Bottom photo is of a winter kill moose head that we found last May when hunting Brown bear on the Alaska Peninsular. Rough measusrement was 62"s. I've tried uploading some other shots of a live moose with about a 50" head without luck (bloody image is huge???)

Top photo is a BGC taken in 2014 on my first moose hunt. No moose but a B&C record book head.

Anyway I'll try and figure out the phot's.

Rod

About 50's apparently and the biggest moose that I've been within rifle shot of.

Moose hunting is a long local tradition here in Ontario..... Lots of searching, walking, scouting, calling, and then a whole lot of heavy work..... Then the challenge and worry of getting the meat back home, cut, wrapped and frozen before it spoils in the often warm mid October weather. The drive is typically 15 hours north (or more) of home here in southern Ontario.

Trophy size is elusive if you’re looking for 60” plus. Best I’ve seen in the bag is a 54” shot by a close friend back in 1982. I did see a really massive heavy antlered exceptional bull up in Pickle Lake but nobody could get a shot off so I can’t honestly say just how big it was.....

I think Newfoundland is a really good bet if success and price are both factors. You won’t see really heavy antlers like you see in the Yukon though. The Newfies are drowning in moose so thick, they are often considered a road pest and a serious night time driving danger. You’re looking at somewhere a little north of $3000 USD for a guided hunt last time I looked about 5 years ago but not sure of today’s prices.

Lots of guys here, in years gone by, thought their #3 Enfields were the best moose ctg. going. Some will admit their new '06's or even .7mm mags are better, others not so sure (especially about the 7mm).
The '06 and 180 CL's or 220RN RP's were favoured for many years. Others went to Win. PP's and Imperial/Dominion KKSP's.

The old 215gr. KKSP RN seemed to work just about as well, they say, from the .303.

My first moose rifle was a .458 2"(American). It was satisfactory for the job. Pull the trigger, shoulder the rifle, walk up to the moose, set the rifle aside, take off the jacket and get to work.

I was reading this and smiling..thinking many of the young people on here would probably have no idea what the hell a Winchester PP is ?? along with CL's..

The '06 is one hell of a cartridge..have not used it much myself, but know and hunt with many that do/have...

Yes - that is a nice caribou. Not very many double shovels around these days.

Looks like there is a little sticker on that right side, that didn't develop into a shovel.

Certainly is a nice looking rack - very unique with white-tail/muley-like point configuration on the tops of the main beams.

Very nice!~

It certainly is a great head -The caribou that is - but I believe Rod has a problem on the home front with it. He hasn't go a room large enough to hang it in. have to admit it would be nice to have that problem.
