Savage model 23. .22K Hornet. Is it any good? Possible to rechamber to .223? I know the .223 will clean up the chamber but what about the extractor?

If memory serves, the Savage 23 was made for low pressure cartridges. 22 Hornet, 25-20 and 32-20 Winchester. I had one years ago, and I think it had only 1 locking lug. The one I had was for the Hornet and was a fair shooter. I think the barrel and reciever were 1 piece. Be careful, Tom

If you haven't owned or used a .22 K-Hornet, you should use it for a while before deciding to rechamber to anything else. You might end up liking it a lot more than any .223.

If it were mine, I'd leave it as is and use it.

Richard.

Micky:
Most early Hornet barrels were .223 in the groove and since the Savage 23D in .22 Hornet was dropped in 1947, it may be .223 instead of .224 - not a good choice for a .223 Rem with it's higher pressures.
23's were also made in 25/20 and 32/20, both low pressure pistol/rifle cartridges.
Another thought - Does it have enough bolt travel to handle the longer .223? Dave

Guys

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I got the number wrong. It is a Mod 219. It was a .22 Hornet that has been rechambered to K Hornet. The rifle was restocked in a decent piece of Walnut, new steel trigger guard. Polished insides with a new and heavier pin. Scope mounts machined into the rib like a Ruger with Ruger rings.

I got it. I will post pics as it is a neat little rifle.

The 219's also came in 30/30 - sometimes the barrels (only) show up on ebay but usually go high.
I have a 219 .22 Hornet barrel but it is on a hammer shotgun frame and needs the firing pin bushed to work well but it is very accurate.
I have been looking for a 219 in 30/30 at a reasonable price as it would give me a two barrel set.

Are all the barrels interchangeable or is special fitting required?

I have not had a chance to try the hammerless action used on the 219 but headspace is a simple fix on those single shot actions.
It has been my experience with the shotgun barrels that they usually will interchange. Dave

Careful of the wrong twist for the new caliber.

Mick

How are those pictures coming? That is exactly what I want to do to a 219 in 30-30. I would love to see how it was done, and how it looks.

Thanks, Photog

Very slow. I'll go do it now. I still haven't shot it but I did get some dies and bullets.
