.404 Jeffery Mauser Rifle by DORLEAC

We completed the making of this safari rifle in 2010.
Unfortunately the original owner sells this piece for health reasons and as this rifle has well served him on several West Africa safaris it has just been the subject of a full overhaul in our workshop.
This .404 Jeffery uses a rare Original Mauser solid wall action with front flat top only.
The blue printed mechanism has been optimized for the DGX® 400-grains cartridge and uses a high-capacity magnum magazine, side swing two positions safety and a single stage trigger.
The 26" Lothar Walther match grade barrel sports a rear express sight whose the wide V standard is highlighted by an inlaid gold triangle while the two folding leaflets are gold lined, the whole regulated on an interchangeable caterpillar front sight set on an elongated ramp with fold away protector.
The rifle is equipped with an illuminated reticle 1.25-4x20 Schmidt & Bender fitted on traditional claw mounts for easy scope dismantling without loss of zero. The front base is brazed on the barrel while the rear lock is inserted in the receiver bridge.
The French walnut stock follows our modernized classic style with straight comb, beaded oval cheekpiece, trapped grip cap and leather covered soft butt pad.
Action, barrel and magazine are rust blued, the furniture, grip cap and some fittings are bone and charcoal color case hardened while the extractor blade and ejector box spring are nitre blued.
This perfectly balanced rifle weighs 8lbs 11oz.

Fantastic rifle Joel, super sleek. It looks more like a 30-06 than a 404. Beautiful timber with lovely colour. Really elegant, well done.

If I may ask, how many rounds does it hold ?

What is the muzzle diameter ?

The barrel ends at 15,5mm (about 5/8") and the capacity is five rounds as engraved on the magazine floorplate.

Apart for the milled radius in the front ring, Not much metal removed from the standard action (if any at all) to accomodate the 404 round?

Impossible to say that when looking at a closed action. Most of the metal work is in lengthening the magazine box and correspondingly the magazine well of the action itself. Usually quite a bit is taken from the feed ramp/lower lug recess area and side rails. There is no need to mill a notch into the rear of the receiver ring which of course is 'eating' into the back of the top locking lug recess. Mauser themselves milled such a notch into their Type B for the 30.06 but this was more to accommodate charging the magazine from a clip but when loading 404 rounds into an opened up standard 98 Mauser they drop down in the lengthened magazine easily.

Winchester did similar metal work when opening up their standard pre'64 Model 70's to a 'magnum' action for the 375H&H etc.

Aside from all this it is a pleasure to see such fine workmanship on such a fine rifle and of course for one of the finest cartridges for African large and dangerous game.

The milled notches in the front ring (top and left side) are for easy loading and ejection of loaded round.
Not metal has been removed from the front as all needed length has been machined on the rear of receiver.

Do you use a modified bolt stop to gain more space of operation ?

Hadn't seen this one before. Beautiful work!

Still, can't help but wondering a little if reducing the mag capacity by 1 cartridge wouldn't have made for sleeker lines of the stock. An aesthetic question for sure - and opinions will differ.

The checkering and recoil pad are just to my taste however. Having my own 404 getting a new stock done, and I can only hope to get it looking this wonderful.

Another wonderful creation. Puts my modern .404 with its stubby barrel to shame.

I think five cartridges in the magazine is great, and needed sometimes when the sh$$ hits the fan ... for me the lines are already nice and sleek, and the weight at 8 lbs 11 ozm might even be a little light under recoil. But perhaps good stock fit decreases the felt recoil. ie compared to my own rifle.

Great work again Joel, I think I missed this rifle in blued form but perhaps saw it on an earlier thread in the white?
