Question about the .450 #2 BPE
      #325675 - 10/03/19 10:29 PM

I'm looking at a rifle that is advertised as a .450 #2. The rifle is pre smokeless. Is this the same cartridge as the .450 3 1/4"?

Sounds more like the .450 musket #2, different than .450 3&1/4".

Darn I was sure hoping not. This rifle is too nice and to good to be a #2 musket. I've had one and it's pretty anemic.

I wouldn't say that.
There were three main original loadings.
400gr bullet, 65grs powder
450gr bullet, 70grs powder
and a load for a 480gr bullet and 76grs of powder.

I don't see any of these as particularly anemic...

Yep, the performance equivalent of the black powder loaded .45-70 that was later on loaded with “Nitro for Black”.

500gr. at 1,500fps is pretty good in a nitro for black load.
ie: 52gr. IMR3031.
Interesting.
That load will pen. end to end & exit his chest on a big BC Bull moose. My bro has done that with his .45 3 1/4 Sharps. same ballistics using a 500gr. Hornady with BP load of 120gr. M0oose braced his front feet and refused to take a step. Dropped in his tracks after about 10 seconds. The impact was quite audible - WHUCK!

iirc, the no. 2 musket was another cartridge for the real cape guns around the century for hunters in south africa so it must have been enough for plains game
