Four From Across the Pond
      #324550 - 12/02/19 12:39 AM

I had them out for a little quality time yesterday and snapped this photo with my phone.  Enjoy!

From top to bottom:

Alexander Henry .450 3-1/4" Express made in 1871;

John Rigby & Co. .40-70 SBN made in 1880;

Army & Navy Farquharson .450-400 3-1/4" Nitro Express made in 1911; and

Fraser .303 made around turn of the century.

The Henry got some range time on Saturday.  Quite a pleasure to shoot. Perfect black powder loads, of course.

2 more vintage British [Re: CptCurl]

Roscoe started it, so I figured I would add to it.
...2 MORE FROM ACROSS THE POND

2 feet of snow here, so I can only take them out and wipe them down.
- 1902 Webley .577 3” 90-650 Cordite Rifle circa 1912-15
- Cogswell & Harrison .500/.450 #1 BPE from circa 1872

It will be good to get a good ol show and tell going.
I think the full length photos are excellent to have too.

Thanks!

The A&N had its day in the sun at this thread: http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat....8&fpart=all

It really looks much better in proper light than it appears in the photograph at the beginning of this thread. For some reason the incoming light in the above photo of the four made the wood look washed out in the eye of my phone camera. it's really quite well figured and colored.

Isn't that the truth - might have to make another trip to Virginia, if that happened.
Besides there were a bunch of guns I didn't get to shoot.

The left hand lock makes it easier for a right handed shooter to load and unload the rifle.

Not quite up to Huvius' standard but for your interest

Alexander Henry Best rifle in .450 No. 2 Musket for the Duke of Marlborough (Winston Churchill's grandfather) 7 January 1877

Alexander Henry plain grade rifle in .450 Express, one of 3 ordered together by the Duke of Westminster for his stalkers??
2 October 1894

Early George Gibbs Match rifle, 1870s? rebarrelled to .500 3" by Jeffrey, probably early 1900s

Farquharson in 450/400 3/14" Nitro by Thomas Turner (who made many rifles for WJ Jeffery)
Dates 1903-1910, debatable after discussion with Jonathan Kirton

Maybe a few more to follow

I was just wondering the same thing, only from the aspect of UK’s laws wherein one can posess an antique or obsolete weapon “off licence” as long as the caliber is on an approved list and no ammo is held.

TH44,
They are all beauties and such a shame that they probably (just my guess) are relegated to not being fired.

Sarge, go ahead. It takes all types and all sizes of wallets too.

Here is an impetus for you. Not up to the standard displayed here either, but I am not shy. I do not have a rifle "from across the pond" but "across the state/colonial border".

My Rosier Martini-Henry sporting rifle in .577/450. From the same maker reported to have supplied firearms to the Kelly Gang, and a similar era firearm.

OK guys, what is the rationale for some single shots having a hammer on the left side as well as the more common right side?

For left handed shooters?

Alexander Henry often used a left-hand lock on his single shot rifles to aid a right-handed shooter. It puts the hammer out of the way for loading and unloading the rifle. Access to the breech is completely clear of the hammer.

With the hammer on the right side of the rifle a right-handed shooter must navigate around the hammer to load or unload his rifle.

That makes sense and I agree as to the ease of loading and unloading a rifle with a left hand lock but it seems rather random.
Oddly, all of my Alexander Henry retailed rifles have right hand locks and the two retailed by Dickson, Purdey and both have left hand locks.

Mike - your question about shooting in the UK - I am most jealous of you guys in the US and elsewhere who can shoot these rifles easily

I have .577 and .577/450 on licence and irregularly shoot them, although only on a range
There is an anomaly that I can chop/change them from obsolete calibre to legal firearm albeit with time consuming paperwork - peculiar and illogical bit much better than not being able to shoot them at all

I also am a (police) approved "servant" of a Registered Firearms Dealer friend and as such, if the rifle is temporarily put on his records I can legally test and shoot it, although I do not abuse it

I have used Nitro for black using 4831 - 40% of black in a .577 Snider but did not use a magnum primer (essential IMHO) and had unburned powder everywhere and potential for detonation ! so:
All my shooting of them now with BP only, (what most of the were designed for) plenty of information around for that and reasonable accuracy
The .577/450 I use the lighter carbine bullet 405 grain instead of the 480 grain rifle bullet, ahead of 85 grains of BP it is easier on my old shoulder!

Thanks for all your positive comments, it is a pleasure to communicate with like minds

Tony

It might be old but its a pretty good looking rifle none the less, I would be happy to own it.

Matt.

John - I agree with Matt, you have a genuine original shooter that would take any game and has real character, nothing to be embarrassed about, we all love to see them
Everybody please post!

Tony
