Would a solid frame Greener GP in 12 gauge handle it? - would the case go round the bend? 2 3/4 inch or 3 inch?

imho, the 577/500 No. 2 is the biggest cartridge working in the greener police gun

I'm not sure on this but I think we had a thread on this some where & the 2 3/4in .577 cartridge would fit, also think it should be .577 BPE/Light Nitro & don't use the split ring action ?

I have had a of couple cool old shotguns to convert, even a underlever but too nice (Lack of money to) to cut up & rebuild into a rifle !

I purchased a martini action hoping to emulate this rifle. https://www.gunsamerica.com/923583364/English-577-Express-Big-Bore-Rifle.htm it said to me that it can be done. I took notes on the rifle and saved the pics. Thinking that Krieger can provide the profile and the twist.

That is .577? 2 3/4 inch or 3 " I guess it is BP or Light nitro. Any idea what bullet it was set up for? Greener GP 12G action?

I have a 'spare' Mk III Martini action, if all goes to plan I'll make it on this lovely old calibre along the lines of what Kynoch posted - you definitely have good tastes matey!
Reason being that I already load & cast for the 500 3", so it will have to be a .510" barrel.
The 577 2 3/4" won't fit the conventional Martini Henry from memory?
DoubleD will definitely tell you one way or the other.

Thanks for posting the pic 9.3. The text of the ad is below. Not a lot of information but it does provide the barrel length and weight. The barrel near the breech is stamped ".577 Express". Looking at the proofs I would guess it's a .577 BPE.

Description:
English 577 Express Big Bore Rifle. Caliber is 577 23/4" Express. "W.W. Greener" 68 Haymarket St., London Address. First introduced in the 1880's in black powder form and later as the 577 "Nitro" Express form, both in 23/4" and 3" versions. Bullet weights range from 520 grains up to 650 grains in the 23/4" Express form. The "Nitro" for black powder loading was 75 grains of cordite smokeless powder and a 650 grain bullet. Built using a "Braendlin" Armory Co. "Martini" patented action. This company supplied these actions to the English gun trade for some time and was acquired by "W. W. Greener" in the later 1890's. Rifle weights approximately 9 1/4 lbs. and has a 28 3/4" barrel. The .585" bore is in excellent condition as is the metal and wood. As they say "Used but well cared for". This extremely rare rifle will make a wonderful shooter with the 75 grain "Nitro" for black powder load, or modern handload equivalent load and of course reduced loads. See the pictures for barrel "Markings", address , caliber, "Proofs" and any other details you may wish to know. Own this piece of Big Bore History for a "fraction" of the side by side Double rifle price! ASKING $5,999.

Re: the GunsAmerica advert pictures.
The “25” with the original proof marks is the bore diameter in gauge (.571”) and was used until 1887 at which time barrel bore size stamping was changed to decimal. (ie: 577 EX)
So the barrel was proofed for black powder no later than 1887. The later roughly stamped “.577 EXPRESS” has no bearing on existing proof and this rifle is not Nitro Proof. Safe “Nitro for Black” loads will still work.
Buyer had better slug the bore before they shoot it, even though .585 bore is advertized, the actual groove diameter could be as tight as ~.579-.581 and could possibly have originally been a .577 Snider.

My personal thoughts: the asking price is astronomically silly.....1880’s rifle (or at least barrel), modern refinish on metal & wood, not a Nitro rifle.

Plus one for Mike - price is far too high (although I am in the UK~)

Not to say a .577 2 3/4" is not viable in a Martini but I would be very careful about this one

I have a double .577 3" (posted here somewhere), a good cartridge but at that early time not quite up to the bore rifles for dangerous game in cover

Good luck whichever way you go

Thanks for that DD, you mention NE, is that a full NE or a light nitro load, what out of interest, is your load? and how is the recoil in what was not a particularly heavy gun to start with?
