Just an old Winchester Model 70.

Last year I acquired an old Winchester M70. Just a plain jane .30-06 built in 1951. When I got it, it was set up with the old Weaver Pivot Mount and a Weaver KV 2.75-5 scope. I swapped out the scope with a Leupold 3-9 and made a sling for it and cleaned it up a bit and that was that. Loaded some 180 grain Hornady Spire Points and zeroed it, and did my annual qualification with it on the old Norwegian Reinsdyrprøve like we do every year with every rifle we hunt with and then held it in reserve for a back up.

Well, this year, at least for a time, the backup became the primary. As it turned out, my SAKO AV 6.5x55 slipped from the tow rope on one of my tree stands and snapped the stock in two. So the old Winchester was brought into service.

And serve it did. A cow elk got in its way and the old gun put meat in the freezer yet again before I could get the SAKO back up and running.

Agreed... bummer about the Sako's stock...

My older friend has one very similar to that in .243...

Thanks, it's a neat old shootin iron. Nothing special. I have thought that the first owner must have been pretty happy with it as it is an early '50's gun and commercial production of sporting arms was just getting back to hit its stride after the war and the Remington 720-series guns were competition and IIRC quite a bit cheaper.

XAUSA mentioned something in another thread about the pre-war actions being slicker than the post-war jobs. This one feels about like a Krag. It wasn't used much before I got it but someone put a kickpad on it and fitted it quite well, too.

I usually epoxy bed all my used guns almost out of habit, but this one I left alone.

I've been told by collectors that one downside to these old '70's is that the parts often do not interchange well and especially bolts can be problematic so one doesn't want to break anything.

RIPP: I found a replacement for my SAKO. Shot a couple deer and 5 coyotes with it this season so it's back in operation!

I have an old P14 in .303 that has served as my pig rifle for more than a few years, might not get so much work now-a-days but its always dependable!
Just because it's old doesn't mean useless - glad you have a rifle that your really comfortable with (& fills the freezer for you)like my old rifle .

Very nice rifle and great to see it being used. I have always had like the Model 70 and that one being a pre64 is particularly nice. Good on you.
