Certus rifle 450/400
      #313635 - 07/03/18 10:37 PM

Hello everyone,
I have been a member of the forum for some time; sadly not a very active one. Until now that is.
I bought a rifle some years ago which has been languishing awaiting revival. It is a big bore Certus. I include some pictures of things that baffle me.
The questions I am trying to answer are follows:
a) The safety does not work and someone seems to have switched the lever from one side of the bolt to another. Is this a classic case of amateur gunsmithing or could there be another reason?
b) The barrel has been shortened - again amateur work or has anyone seen another rifle with a shortened barrel.
c) Is there any literature on these?
d) I live in the UK. Is there anyone who can restore such gun? I think it needs a new barrel - the bore is clean but rifling looks weaker that I would expect. Safety needs sorting.
e) How does one get the bolt out?
f) The trigger guard is screwed into the stock with two (not original looking) wood screws. Is it just the screws that are non original or is the method of attachment also dubious.
It is a fascinating gun. If anyone has one or has any information they could share, that would be great.
Thank you
John

Looks like the safety lever is on the wrong side and the arm should be much longer to engage the two detents on the side of the bolt.
I’ve never played around with one of these but the first thing I would try to pull the bolt is to hold the trigger down and see if it simply pulls out.

He who lives in the past is doomed to enjoy it.

35Whelen,
PM a young fellow with the moniker of ASH he actually has one of these rare old birds.
I would reload first & see if the barrel was completely washed out, some rifling styles look rather shallow; but more than enough to stabilize the bullet!
You have a fantastic old girl there, a bit of TLC & she'll be up & going.
It would be best to slug your bore before buying projectiles as this calibre existed in a few guises.
Try & get Graeme Wright's Shooting the British Double rifle he has some good loads for it there for it.
Cheers

Huvius is right - trigger in to pull the bolt out.

Can’t see the pics anymore, came too late!

Safety on mine doesn’t work either and is also backwards (ha!), never had it apart to try and fix. Probably should.

The rifling on mine isn’t super deep either. Most of these guns didn’t seem to get a huge workout so maybe that’s just how they are? I’ve never seen another to compare to though.
