Namibia Safari - Camp, critters and companions
      #32264 - 29/05/05 02:53 AM

Camp was very, very comfortable. All the tents are brand new, and are very large as you can see. Each tent is furnished with a brand new hotel quality box spring and mattress, a writing desk, solar powered lights, and a wardrobe for your clothes. Going out the rear of the tent is an enclosed private bathroom on a poured concrete slab, with a flush toilet, sink, and shower. Hot water was supplied via a donkey boiler fed by a 500 gallon water tank that was filled by a solar powered pump.

Gehkos are included at no extra charge, and are welcome because they eat what few insects one encounters. This one took up residence above my bed.

The sunsets were incredible! We were treated to scenes like this every evening.

Mike's companions on safari, but why didn't he invite us along!?

Why didn't I invite you along?....I couldn't find enough gun bearers to keep me happy, let alone share . I hope my wife never sees this, or I'll never get to go on Safari again .

Going native with himba! But did he pay enough?

Actually, I paid plenty...$10.00 Namibian...@ $1.75 U.S.for the photos I took of her and her girl friends.

She doesn't look happy with the payment however!

You sure took a lot of firearms with. No wonder you needed all those gunbearers. It must have been hot too.

Nice looking comfortable camp.

Actually, she and her friends were very greatful-offering thanks in profusion.

For a tented camp, one couldn't have asked for better. Of course we didn't dine on fine china or drink from lead crystal glasses, but it was still fantastic!

I only wish I had more rifles to take along so I could have hired more gun bearers , but then again, I also had to think about getting out of bed every morning at 5:15 to go hunting. Maybe next time .

It definitely was N10.00. If it was R100.00, she would have had to become one of my gun bearers .

Mike:

Any nasty critters encountered over there? Such as snakes? For the record, I really hate snakes...

If you're in Africa, you're in snake country. In 7 trips, I can count on 1 hand the number of snakes I've personally seen. None were seen on this trip by either my friend or myself. A non-poisonous grass snake did slither across our camp area one afternoon that shook up the camp staff a bit though.

Mike,

I'm not sure you'd be able to handle her. Himba women can be quite feisty!

And if you did "handle her", the rubbed off ochre colored evidence would be all over you for days!

An embarrassing shade of red, perhaps.

Mike,

Do you have any other photos of the Himba and their way of life?
