Spent Thanksgiving weekend in the woods/hills as its the last weekend for big game in Montana..was after the illusive trophy mule deer..the area was hit especially hard last winter..finding dozens of dead deer in the snow in the spring..not much for deer size but spotted 14 bucks total. Had a great time being out and about..another year in the books..

Either way a very nice deer..

Ripp and all in north west US / western Canada, please stop posting photos of such big animals! You were gifted by God to live in such a land of hunting bounty and this is really unfair to the rest of the world. I am now becoming extremely shy to post photos of the tiny quarries one can harvest in western Europe!

Found this guy rummaging through some older hunt photos..this was NOT 2018--about 2-3 years ago =--maybe more, hell, time moves pretty fast anymore..

One of my all time best friends and I got in on an awesome hunt..fresh snow--cold temps that day, about -10F--but was a great day for a hunt.. lots of deer moving everywhere..

I have a great deal of empathy for you Louis. I have never shot a trophy like the ones in this thread, but rather have usually shot the first one I've seen that year. At times, my hunt is over the first day - lol - spike or 2-point bucks, 3 point bucks, 2 point or spike bull moose - lol - I don't even keep the antlers - why would I? - they get turned into powder measures or short starter knobs for my black powder shooting obsession.
I do like to see trophy's though (anyone's trophys), harvested by those who actually put some work into their obsession.

While growing up and even into my early 30's, that is all I did as well..first available animal I come across hunting got taken..frankly, hunting was a lot of fun doing it that way..then started looking for bigger and older game...NOW, just happy to just be out in the woods and enjoying the sights, sounds, smells of nature..IF Mr. Big comes along fine, if not, that's fine as well...

Like a friend told me a long time ago, antlers/horns make awful thin soup..

Louis;

I've shot some nice critters over the years but I cannot say I'm a "trophy hunter". We are pretty much meat hunters and like Daryl and RIPP {in his younger years! LOL} I have often shot the first eligible critter I've seen. Especially true with elk. Deer I've waited on from time to time. LOL.

But some European hunters {and deer hunters in the American Deep South} often do have something else going for them, and that is large bag limits.

Here in Idaho for example, basic tags are 1 deer, 1 elk, 1 bear. Then one might be able to apply for an additional one deer or sometimes elk, and in more rare cases, depredation tags are issued for culling crop damaging animals. And in recent years many units have allowed 2 bear. But basically it's 1 animal per species. Contrast this with some Southern states where the bag limits are 1 deer per day for 3 MONTHS. But then, in those areas, often there are limits on the number of bucks that can be taken and of course often they do not have the range of species we do in the Mountain West.

I have read that in many areas of Europe, the bag limits can be very large depending on the management plan of the lands on which the hunt takes place.

My wife's family are all German immigrants and settled in Michigan before WW1, between the Wars and then after WW2. First thing they did when they got off the boat was...get a job. And one of the first paychecks from that job got spent on a rifle and a hunting license! It was a BIG DEAL to them. Here, hunting is an "Everyman's sport". Our history of hunting flows from anti-monarchical concepts of egalitarianism and thus the laws and regulations and bag limits reflect that. In many states {this is changing!} it is also a relatively inexpensive hobby. Of course, now as land use practices have changed and in states like Texas, ACCESS to lands upon which one may hunt can be very expensive. In the American West, tho, there is still vast acreage where one can simply roam unmolested by private interests. This, too, is changing of course, and restrictions on vehicle use and whatnot comes into play.

But we do have it good in so many ways. As RIPP says: "NOW, just happy to just be out in the woods and enjoying the sights, sounds, smells of nature..IF Mr. Big comes along fine, if not, that's fine as well... "

Very true, especially where the vistas are vast and the sights glorious as they are where he hails from and where Daryl and I pull the trigger on the first buck that staggers into our sights!!

Bon chasse!!

Dear 9,3x57

Thank you for your detailed explanation. It is all understood and was understood from start; when I was asking Ripp to "stop posting photos of such big animals" it was really meant to be a joke.

To the contrary of Germany and Central European countries formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, France (but the north-eastern part, Alsace & Lorraine, which were taught good hunting practices by the German between 1870/1918 and 1939/1945) doesn't have really established hunting traditions but for what we call ‘vénérie’, which involves big game hunting (red deer, roe deer, wild boar, fox ; and wolf in the old days) with hounds with followers on horseback, but we will not speak about ‘vénérie’ in this post.

As you mentioned it for the US, folks in France gained the right to hunt from the Revolution in 1789 ; before that hunting was only for the nobility and poachers were harshly prosecuted. Hunting rights are therefore deeply rooted in rural communities and hunting is quite unsophisticated, to say the least; hunters usually seal an area, let the dogs in, shoot indiscriminately at every piece of game that goes out, then share the venison and celebrate. It is quite difficult in such rural communities to get tags for individual hunting, such as stalking. This type of community hunting is still inexpensive but, as you pointed it out, is subject to bag limits; in the village were I live, this year's bag limit for the shooting syndicate (circa 20 active members) is of 16 roe deer and no limit on wild boars (we don't have any other "big" game in this part of the country). As I mentioned it, I cannot get from my village shooting syndicate roe deer tags for "individual" hunting as for them the sport is to be "collective" and, although they allow me to shoot wild boars, I must share the venison of those I harvest; all very tribal in fact!

Although it is becoming more common, stalking is therefore not the norm in France and if you want to stalk, then you must either find village shooting syndicates that will sell you some of their annual tags but there are not many, or own/rent huge tracts of land in order to get hunting rights on this acreage, or hunt with the French Forestry Commission that retains hunting rights on government-owned land. In such circumstances, your annual bag will only be limited by the time you can spend hunting and by how deep your wallet is.

In my own case, my main limitations to hunting are currently time and managing my wife’s expectations : time as I travel a lot for advising on international projects and wife's expectations as many wives are under the impression that their husbands should dedicate all their available time, mainly if they are often away, to fulfilling home/family related duties. Despite such ‘adverse’ conditions, I managed so far this year to harvest one roe deer and two isards, and I may hopefully get some more before the season closes on 28 February.

As we all do, I first go hunting for the pleasure of being alone or with a good friend out in the hills for one or for a couple of days, afterwards I select the quarry on the trophy's size, and then I always take back the venison I have harvested with me. Mountain hunting also involves for me another important dimension ; it is every year the renewed personal challenge of remaining fit enough in order to overcome difficult mountain hunting conditions and the personal satisfaction of having done it another year again!

I will post photos of my hunting season in France, small bag but real enjoyment, as soon as it will come to a close and, in the meantime, I look forward to enjoying my peers’ posts on the Forum.

Best regards.

Louis

Louis

For someone who knows nothing about how hunting works in France, that was very interesting..thank you for the explanation..

Makes me realize how lucky I have been in my lifetime with access to large areas of both forest and private grounds to do my hunting/hiking/fishing in...

As to the wife's expectations...best keep them happy, it took me several before I figured that one out..
