Lol- I think the 2 got into a ruckus, locked up, one got it's neck broken and after a while, rotted enough to break off in the neck.

Makes more sense than their supposition that a buck attacked a dear deer. I cannot imagine that EVER happening. They always posture before locking horns. If dead, that one could not & the other would not have been able to hit it at the angle needed to lock up. Their supposition sucks.

The suggestion that a mature buck attacked a dead deer is preposterous. imho

edited a couple min. later: too - that is exactly how my "beer addled brain sees this!" afterall, it's 1:24AM and time for bed. I can still think, but not drive (well) LOL.

Of course I've had some time to think about all of this,

while playing world of tanks for the last few hours - HA!

Even won most.

I agree , it was like this. I cannot imagine that a deer fight with a dead animal.

It's not rare that two locked red deers are found dead after a fight. That one survives and drags a long time the cadaver of the other one , newer heard before.

Absolutely stags and bucks will fight with a carcase during the rut.

The explanation of the buck getting locked up with a heaviky rotted carcase makes sense. Had one buck died in the fight, the other locked up buck would also die. But with a rotted carcase it makes sense the head may work loose. Not with a fresh carcase.

Rutting fallow bucks for example, will fight anything. Including a dead deer. I have deer and have seen it. Bucks with antlers often kill each other or themselves. Leave loose wire anywhere and they will find it and fight with it. Same with hay bale netting bits buried anywhere. Bits of wire. Rope left on a gate, great to fight with, wrap it around your antlers, around your neck and strangle oneself and hang their. Another ffffing breeding buck gone after years of selective breeding ... Snakes, other deer etc. Leave a carcase in the paddock and anyof the boys will fight with it. Even a stinky old carcase left too long. Doesn't have to be the rut either.
