Shot my first really nice double today. Met a friend at the range that had a "surprise" to show. He uncased a beautiful hammer H&H double chambered in 577 Nitro. What a joy to shoot and the rifle was a "Best Quality" made in 1898. Stunning rifle and wonderful shooter. At 50 yards, the left and right barrel were about an inch apart with me shooting it from the bench. I still haven't attempted to my 500 Jeffery bolt gun from the bench yet, but the 577 13lb double wasn't bad at all.
Gotta get me one of those!

Not a bad one to get hooked by either. A best quality hammer (classic!) 1898 H&H .577 NE.

Since you say the recoil isn't bad, how much did it weigh? I'm guesstimating about 13# and change. How come you haven't dirtied your 500J, huh? Inquiring minds want to know.

The rifle did weigh around 13 lbs. I shot it from the bench, rifle in my hands and elbow propped on the bench. What great fun!
As for the 500 Jeff, I had Lasik eye surgery last fall and the surgeon warned me to lay off the big guns for awhile. Was hoping to get out during bear season this year and take the Jeff with me, but am having to get stingy with the vacation time because of the trip to Zim this summer. I have been shooting the rifle. It usually gets a few rounds shot from it on each trip to the range, no matter the reason for the trip to the range.

To para-phrase Jeff Cooper when he lit one off, "It was exhilarating!" I've seen some guys who had them at under 12# because they didn't want to lug around a heavy rifle and I could tell they weren't having any fun at all.
