Well, I made it back.
      #32139 - 27/05/05 10:23 AM

I just got back from Namibia about an hour ago. I'm really tired after 40 hours on the road and in the air. Had a great, fair chase hunt. I'll provide more details later, but I took an old bull Giraffe, Mt. Zebra, 41 X 41 5/8 Bull Gemsbok, and a 13" Warthog.

Can I get a volunteer to post pics for me please?

Great stuff. Sounds like a huge warthog, and gemsbok. And giraffe too, cool.

Welcome back.

Right on Mike, I'm looking forward to stories and pictures. What do you plan on doing with the giraffe?

I'm going to have a rug made from it. It will be trimmed in dark brown leather. I'm also going to have 2 pillows made from the skin from the uppermost part of the neck.

Thanks for the welcome back. It was a great hunt! As you know, I was hunting with Vaughan Fulton, of Fulton Classic Safaris, www.fultonclassicsafaris.com . Camp was very nice. It was a tented camp which sat in a beautiful valley overlooking a dry river bed. The tents were huge, and equipped with brand new hotel style beds with box spring bases and mattresses! The tents also had a writing table and wardrobe. Outside, but attacged to the rear of each tent was a bathroom with flush toiled, sink and shower. Hot water was provided by a donkey boiler which was fed by a 500 gallon water tank that was filled by a solar powered pump. Lighting around camp was from Tiki style, oil lamps, and solar powered lights. A generator was provided to recharged camera batteries, etc. The meals were excellent-3 hot meals a day were provided, and Vaughan provided bottled water and sodas in a cooler box while you were out in the field. Trophy care appeared to be first rate.

This was a true fair chase hunt on over 860,000 acres of a Himba Tribal Conservancy. Vaughan allows no shooting from the vehicle, or near water holes. The game populations are high, and the animals are in excellent physical condition as this past rainy season produced record rain fall. In fact, the grass in this area is usually @ 12 inches high, but due to the record rains, the grass was very thick, and over the hood of the truck in all areas.

I want to add, that this area is ideal for someone looking to take a Mountain Zebra without having to climb mountains. Most of the Mountain Zebra here are found in the valleys, and there are many, many zebra to hunt. The largest Kudu were still up in the mountains, but with the rut coming on, the will be coming down into the valleys and river bottoms by the first part of June. Eland, Springbok, and Gemsbok are all over the place! There are many Gold Medal trophies there! This is also an excellent Leopard hunting area. Vaughan has a Leopard hunter coming in two weeks, and 3 or the 4 baits he has out now, are being hit actively. These are big cats too! We saw many, many tracks daily, and had one pass through camp one evening.

If anyone has any questions, drop me a pm.

Welcome back Mike! I look forward to seeing some pictures!

Since you were in a Himba area, did you have any contact with any of them? I have to say that they are amongst some of the more interesting tribes in africa that we encountered, since many still live the same life that their ancestors did.

Erik

As a matter of fact, there are several Himba and Herero villages on the concession. Part of Vaughan's contract includes him providing the villages with meat. He's allowed to keep 10 kilos of meat from each animal. The rest goes to the villages. Every other day we loaded up a truck full of meat and delivered it to a village. The more remote the village, the more traditional they were. Very interesting people.

It's good I took all those nasty but very funny "Mike-Rigby" jokes off before you got back! We had been counting down the days to your return with a joke a day (only joking!).

If you want assistance in posting photos, send them to my Photos@ ... email address. If they are prints and not digital when scanning please do one to a scan and also try to crop the white out of the scan. It makes them a LOT smaller and easier for my dial-up connectiont to download.

Sounds like a very interesting trip. Especially the contact with the locals. Get covered in any red paint?!

Mike asked me to post the photos for him and I opened up an administration session to assume his identity and posted a number of threads with photos for him to edit and comment on.

Mike

It's obvious you're back, I see all your posts. I'm glad you didn't post the pics all on one shot as it would make my MickeyMouse dial-up connection time-out just for the helluva it. Nice pics and it definitely looks like you enjoyed the trip.

475Guy - it truly was a wonderful trip , but, alas, P.S.D. has already set in .

As for the way the pictures have been posted on seperate threads, we have our own NitroX to thank for that. It was his idea to post them that way, for the exact reason you mentioned.

Mike,

Welcome back! It is obvious that you had a very enjoyable safari, and I see from the pictures that the animals you hunted and shot were of high quality. Just looking at the pictures makes my heart yearn for africa...

Your P.S.D. is understandable. And to make it worse for you, I'm leaving for Zim in only 26 days!

Erik

Erik, good luck in Zimbabwe. If you only have half as much fun as I had, you'll still have a fantastic time.
