Wow! That one is a work of art. Thanks for posting the link Ripp.

They do make some nice guns for sure.

I got to handle a Fanzoj best sidelock DR about 20 years ago.
It certainly was an extremely well made double, and featured very high quality engraving. (Elephant Buffalo Lion Leopard)

A masterpiece for sure! It makes you wonder who commissioned it.

Love the way the engraving tells a story.

I would say that you are probably correct there as many of their clients are Russian or Arabs or even Chinese now. They seem keen on guns that are over the top opulent. Since the son and daughter have joined the firm they have produced quite a few guns that push the boundaries and limits of exhibition type luxury guns. Still, good on them if there is a market for such guns.

I visited Johann Fanzoj's premises in Ferlach in summer 2016. I had bought an English double at Holts and was having it restocked in the UK, but didn't know my dimensions:) I had planned a summer trip to Zagreb and remembered that Fanzoj had a store there. A quick call revealed that there was no try gun in the Zagreb store, but Patrick Fanzoj invited me to Ferlach. So I drove there from Zagreb on a beautiful summer day in a rented VW Golf, arriving about noon. (the town is lovely). Patrick and his parents were especially nice and gave me a tour of the facility, the wood room, the trophy room, gunsmithing area, etc. (they had just put in a new building). Patrick asked his stockmaker to do the measurements and together they spent about 90 minutes with me. Patrick would not let me pay him. I'm very much in his debt. I hope to have him build a Mauser.22 rifle for my daughter when the time is right.

I think that rifle is fantastic. It tells a story. About the great migration of the East African wildebeest herds. I have seen the migrations, back in 1988 in Kenya and Tanzania. IUnfortunately not on the famous Mara River crossing, as the "TV crews" were there and plebs like us were not permitted near it. Don't want two dozens trucks and mini buses in the "wild" and "wilderness" films sold to TV watchers in the West.

BUT I do think wildebeeast scenes are a little at odds with the chosen chamberings of .600 NE and .470 NE. More the choices for elephant, buffalo, in the older days rhino, and perhaps lion. But its the commissioners choice, and the engraving was depictive and well down.

A lot of the Germanic master rifle builders go for these heavier engravings and part of the culture I guess. This rifle still looks classy in my opinion. And the engravings are not clownish and cartoonish as shame some firearms. Look realistic and anatomically correct. Only the leopard lacks a bit, but I can't afford this sort of engraving, so I'm not one to complain!

This firearm will grace someones gun room and be proudly showed off to his guests.

Interestingly the .470 set of barrels are fitted for a scope. Something not often seen on bigger bore doubles. Thankfully no scope bases on the .600!

Thanks for posting the link and story. It needs to be added to our archives.

That's a very good story, obviously very kind and generous people. It is amazing though what real gun enthusiasts will do for other enthusiasts once they sense that they are genuine. I have had amazingly generous experiences from members of the BGRC, I am not talking money but other things I would consider far more generous. Hope you get to have that Mauser 22 built, that will be very nice I am sure.

The Germans and Austrians have been using the relief engraving for a long time and when done well it looks very good. On something like a double or a combination gun it really adds to the enjoyment of owning the gun if done properly, it sort of makes you feel like going hunting just when looking and handling the gun. Even the British are using the deep relief style on some of their doubles, particularly H&H.
