Mauser classics in Australia
      #320841 - 21/10/18 01:23 PM

Hi all,
Especially you Ossie blokes who might be able to give some advice on helping me look for my first classic sporter down under. I'm hoping to compliment my Merkel double recently acquired wth a classic bolt rifle of the Mauser/Mannlicher type ... Shul style is a basic guideline but not absolute. Looking for something special used as I can't afford new, about 5k is the thinking.

I'm also looking at a possible custom build if I can't find anything suitable. That would mean barreled action first and progression as funds are available. From what I have seen on auctions, you can find engraved samples at a fair price which would otherwise cost you extra if going the custom route 6.5 ideally but would go 7's and open to anything no greater than 8mm.

Any collectors out there trimming the herd? Any advice appreciated.

If you can, try the action of a 'pre - WW2' Mannlicher Schönauer before you decide. There's nothing else like it.

The M1903 was chambered for (readily available) 6.5X54MS. The M1905 (9X56MS). M1908 (8X56MS), and M1910 (9.5X57MS) are essentially for handloaders (a worthwhile pursuit), while the M1924 was chambered in .30-'06. The 'M1925' was available in several chamberings, including 7X64.

The 'factory take down system' is a dandy bit of kit. I have one in 9.5X57 (M1910), a.k.a..375 Nitro Express Rimless 2.25", with its original fitted case.

Within your budget of 5k, you may even find a nice cased example:

Cased M1903 (6.5X54) Mannlicher Schönauer Takedown

If you have a 'custom build' done, you may also consider using an action from a '1903 Greek' military Mannlicher Schönauer as they should be somewhat readily available. The 'Greek' MS (Y1903, Y1903 - 14, 1927, 1930) and the MS sporting rifles, carbines, all have shared roots in the M1900 and use the same incredibly smooth Mannlicher Schönauer action and rotary magazine.

Best o' luck, and keep us posted.

I appreciate all the effort you made with such a detailed response Hammer, that is definitely a serious consideration ... especially if the actions are as smooth as you say... is it simply from repeated usage or the nature of these Mannlicher actions? A butter smooth action is a non negotiable for me, just not sure where I’ll find one. Did they come with octagon barrels?

No problem, glad to help. The expert on these matters would be member Kuduae (Axel Eichendorff), a Saxon Forester who uses an M1910 on the job. Several other members own, use, and share information about their MS on the Mannlicher forum as well.

As my replies to you are basically an ode to the Mannlicher Schönauer, I've moved them to the Mannlicher Discussion Forum and Archive (see Mannlicher or Mauser?).

A quick pro and con, though: Mannlicher Schönauers, particularly pre WW2 examples, are renowned for their superior smoothness and balance. The forward location of the bolt handle, however, is not liked by all (doesn't bother me a bit), and they are somewhat difficult to mount scopes upon. That said, scope mounts for the MS are usually of the claw type, allowing effortless one handed scope removal and instant return to 'zero' when replaced.

The MS sporting arms were truly engineered for 'snap shooting' with the iron sights, which is aided by the stock geometry - particularly the 'cast' of the butt. When brought quickly to the shoulder, you're on sight.

Here's a nice 'Mousie':

It sold at auction in 2010, price realized was not disclosed. Description from icollector.com:
Mauser Oberndorf, 60 model, bolt action rifle, 3-barrel set with European style claw mounts, cased with accessories and two fitted scopes. Serial #DBP1205423. The rifle shows “7 SE v. Hofe” caliber barrel measuring 26-3/8” in length. One .243 Winchester barrel measuring 24”, and one 5.6x57 caliber barrel measuring 24-1/4”. Included is a Carl Zeiss 6x42 scope and a Carl Zeiss 1.5x6 power scope also fitted for these mounts. The rifle shows double set triggers, classic European styling, and is in fine to excellent condition with leather carrying case. The barrels and mounts were custom fitted for this rifle by return to factory. The 660 action was one of Mauser’s finest products. Est: $2,500 - $5,000

Those calibre/ cartridges are very versatile Hammer, it seems that outside the motherland it's going to be a bit of hit an miss to find a nice Mauser, no dealer in Australia seems to be specialising in vintage Mausers

Hi Porker,
I have a very clean Mauser 6.5 x 54 for sale. Everyone says it's quite a nice gun, but I have not received a reasonable offer yet. I was asking $8k, would take $7k if the transaction could be done smoothly. That being said, I have no idea about sales from the US to Australia. Just throwing it out there. Here is a link to a thread that a friend in Tennessee started:

Best of luck with your gun hunt.
