Very nice indeed and in really surprising mint condition, Matt; thank you for sharing.
I would love to own it!

Yes, same here. I very much like the pre-war Merkel doubles in both SxS and O/U with the short bolster. The engraving I find to be one of the nicest I have seen, very well executed with and tasteful with a nice background. I would be very happy yo own that as well.

That is a nice rifle and reminds me of the very first double rifle I ever owned. They could be twins.

I parted with my rifle many years ago, but you can see photos of it posted by our member, Dale, who became the owner.

The similarity of its engraving to the one in the OP's link is remarkable.

Had the one Curl notes briefly before Dale. The pre-war Merkel 8X57JRs are sweet little DRs for sure. It's tempting.

Mark,

I hadn't known that double rifle went through your hands also.

Do you still have the Richard Knopf drilling? That's a combination gun worth keeping - I should have kept it myself.

I thought there might be some interest in my Krieghoff Ulm Primus over and under double rifle in caliber 7X65R, which is presently in the process of being converted to 8X65RS and equipped with a lower power Zeiss 1.5-6X36 scope. The rifle is fitted with hand detachable side locks.

This Merkel 132 was just sold at today's Morphy Auction (April 11, 2023). High bid was only $6,000. With bidder's premium that puts this out the door at a little under $7400. Quite a lot of rifle for that price in my opinion.

I love the engraving. Build quality isn't quite as high as the Merkel previously owned by Cpt Curl and currently owned by Dale discussed in this thread (http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=108125&an=0&page=4#Post108125) in that the later (1931) rifle does not have chopper lump barrels and lacks the horn trigger guard, but it does have disc set strikers.

Is it fair to say that proof marks of St.m.G 13gr represent the same proof load as St.m.G 12.5gr? or is this proofed for a slightly heavier jacketed bullet? (I'm referencing Capt.Curl's note in the linked thread that the standard regulation load for the 8x57r is a 196gr bullet and is noted with a proof mark of St.m.G 12.5gr)

Now, that Merkle in 8x57R- is a VERY nice rifle. Like the same one in .303 - it would be all a fella needed for all but the big bears.

Thanks Daryl.

I found this rifle on both Guns International and with Morphy because it was m retailed by the same firm as the boxlock double in 9.3x72r I posted about here. Weisgerber in St Wendel. http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=374531&an=0&page=0#Post374531

The GI listing had beautiful pictures, but the price seemed high. When it was listed in Morphy's auction, I started watching the lot (and a lot of other nice German double rifles). The night before the auction, I entered what I thought was a low ball bid of $6000 through Morphy's site. As far as I can tell, I won the rifle with that, although I would be more confident about that if the interface at Morphy's was less confusing (no where does it say you won, just that you were the high bidder and bidding has stopped. And I don't have an invoice yet.)

I'll share more. It's a beautiful rifle in a great cartridge.

An update. I was the high bidder on the Merkel retailed by Weisgerber. I'll have to start a dedicated post on it once I've gotten a chance to take it to the range. But it is in hand. Pictures below of the Merkel along with the other German double in 9.3x72R that was retailed by Weisgerber 20 years earlier (around 1911).

The 1931 Merkel is at left. An earlier rifle, pre 1912, at right. Both retailed by Weisgerber

I cast the chamber and bore today. Starts fairly open but by 3cm into the barrel from the case mouth it’s down to .318. Any recommendations for bullets? I purchased some loaded ammo but that is .323 and doesn’t chamber. I have brass inbound and bullets from Hawk. Where else should I look for components for 8x57JR?

Buffalo Arms has several bulleyt weights for 0.318" bullets. When I last ordered some, the were on backorder but two months later, I received my order.

S&B loads 8x57JR and it is fairly inexpensive.

I was able to find some older boxes of S&B 8x57JR from a local source and took the Merkel out to the range yesterday for the first time. Happy to report that this rifle can shoot. 50yd group was decent and getting better as I got more familiar with the sights and triggers. The range I belong to just moved to a new site and the new rifle range has berms at 100 and 200 yards with steel targets. Was impressed when I hit 2 of 2 at 100 and really happy to hit the first of two rounds at 200 yards. This is with irons and some older eyes. It’s a keeper.

Only issue was the gun was hard to open. I’m not seeing primer issues and the projectiles are the correct .318. I have brass, bullets and dies in hand so I’ll try a lighter load and see if that addresses the issue without impacting accuracy.

If you could chronograph the speeds the S&B were doing it would be a great reference point for you CJF.
Perhaps these loads are starting to deteriorate & getting a bit hot for the action?
Absolutely top notch piece of kit there mate, she's worth every penny you spent.

I think you’re right about using a chronograph. I have never had one. Probably a good next step on my journey with these old rifles.
