425 WR Double. Anyone out there have one?
      #32035 - 26/05/05 08:24 AM

Hi Guys. Does anyone have a .425 Westley Richards double
rifle? I just picked one up from a friend, sight unseen,
and it feels about like handling a cement block. It weighs
11 lb 9 oz empty. Just curious what any others might weigh.
It is easy to shoot off the bench though. TIA raff

Is this a Westley Richards rifle? I saw one at SCI years ago, at Champlin I think. It was like any other WR and was definetly not a cement block.

I seem to recall that the Westley Richards Agency (USA) had one fairly recently. Maybe the same rifle? Can't imagine any Westley qualifying as a "cement block".

2triggers

A 11 lb 9 oz .425 WR does sound heavier than it needs to be. But any double at 11 lbs or more (mine is 11 1/2lbs) feels very heavy when you pick it up. But try swinging them and pointing them and you will find if they point and balance well. Unfortunately their weight is not like a lovely fine light weight 12-bore 2 1/2" game gun, but fortunately the weight does dampen the recoil and make them comfortable to shoot.

(edited: my double is not a .425 WR BTW)

Dan,

Lovely bolt action there. But does the fore-end look a bit short?

BEAUTIFUL grain pattern on that rifle...I'm a sucker for wood.

John,

I really can't say if the foreend differes from original specs or not. This one is from the WR website.

I think the fore-ends were shorter than we would expect today. But that stock really looks like a modern 'classic' stock.

I had one in the '70's. I dug through the in the old records and found some information. It was a HD drop lock, as I recall with a hinged floorplate. Wt is listed as 11.5#, but don't show if that is with or without the scope. I'm thinking without, but not sure. It was made for a lady in India of royality, but forget which state. The forend was set up for a spotlight attachment for night shooting. The factory 'scope and rings were gone. Gene Clark of New Orleans Arms made new mounts and fitted a Lyman Alaskan 'scope for me. Rifle made in 1920 as per WR, #17656. I show 25" barrels. Auto ejectors. Never had a failure. Also made cases from .404's. Left the rim full diameter and just cout the groove to .425 diameter. This gave the ejectors a lot more bit on the case. It shot very well with the right load. I still have some steel jacketed Kynoch bullets in the garage.
I sold the rifle to Champlin in about '80. It surfaced again in Bill Feldstein's auction of some firearms 4-5 years ago. If I recall correctly the forearm had been replaced in the interviening years after '80, but not sure on that. Seem to remember reading that in the lot description.

Is it the same rifle?

It hasn't been too long ago I saw a fixed lock WR in .425 for sale someplace, maybe WR.

Not mine - but this 425 WR gold name droplock was for sale last year in Alaska. The owner wanted 16G. He eventually sold it.
