Farquharson Firing Pins
      #182147 - 22/05/11 11:13 AM

Finally got crackin on making some new firing pins for the Farqs. Bouldersmith will approve!

This first picture shows from right to left (set them out backwards - oops):

A pin from a PD Farq that had apparently broken and was repaired by drilling and tapping the face then threading in a replacement tip (not present) - not very sturdy.

A pin from another Farq. Either A Jeff or a Rigby - don't remember.

Two new steel pins made to the shape of the second.

And a brass test piece we ran to insure all of the tool paths were OK prior to running on steel.

All of the original pins I have seen have the groove toward the rear. I am not sure what function this serves on a PD - maybe to carry lubricant or just a holdover from some of the Gibbs blocks which had another crosspin which held the firing pin in which is of course not needed since the firing pin cannot come out unless the block crosspin is removed anyway. Some are narrower than others and one gun I have has no groove at all but looks like a replacement. We kept the groove since it may reduce the chances of binding in the block or maybe if grime does creep in around the firing pin, it may give it a place to accumulate.

Now, all that is left is to mill the slots and the top recess where the block crosspin rides.

Original and the new replica pin (top).

If anybody needs a replacement and yours looks like these, let me know. We made these .3665" dia. The original is .3685" and the one from my Hughes is .364" but fits much looser than is needed. We will see if the .3665" is good as an average diameter that will fit most if not all PD Farq. blocks.

If you are still making Farquharson firing pins, I would be interested in getting one. I bought a Farquharson that will be shipped to me soon. It is missing the firing pin (or perhaps tip broken)

When I get it, i will disassemble the action and verify that the only issue is a firing pin.

We only made a few but I do have a couple left.
Let me know once you take a look at your rifle.

Huvius,
Thanks. I should receive the Farquharson in a week to 10 days and will touch bases with you then.

The idea of the connecting link going through the slot in the striker is so that when the lever is first released and has that little bit of free play,it withdraws the striker slightly to stop it from sticking in the primer. The design is ingenious but takes a bit of playing with to get right.

That’s exactly right.
The pins we made are just the turned piece and the slot and undercut will have to be machined for the connecting link to pass through.
Hopefully the broken pin is present so the slot can be replicated.
I suspect the the slot is fairly standard though.

Huvius,
Thanks. I should receive the Farquharson and it does not have a firing pin.

I suspect a former owner removed it because the trigger needs to be recut and wanted to make sure there was not an accident with a "hair" trigger. The trigger will have to be sorted out before I shoot the gun unless I want to use the top safety as the trigger.

The firing hole in the block is 0.375" diameter.

If you have a firing pin, I would like to buy that from you.

Also if you have a firing pin (even with a broken tip) that I could borrow to copy, that would be greatly appreciated.

You should contact Steve Bertram to see if he has any tips as far as making the cuts in the pin.
He should also have a broken pin that came out of a Farq of mine he is working on. If he is done with that one maybe I can get it from him and send it with the new one.
You could put the broken one in and see if the timing is right with that one before you slot the new one.

Speaking from experience I doubt if you'll find anything standard on these rifles. It would probably be better to get someone with some experience of Farquharson's to make a firing pin from scratch to fit your rifle properly.

Huvius,

Thanks. I had a great talk with Steve and he will send me a couple of pins to use as examples. I will return them to him when I am finished.

Steve also gave me an idea of what could be causing the trigger issue and how to correct that problem. I will try what he suggested when I get the pin issue resolved.

Thanks again,
