Anything in N America. Up to but not including Wild Cattle and Pachyderms in Africa. It is a fun cartridge in a MOD 95 Win and I have seen some Double Rifles in it. I think that Ruger might be doing the #1 also.

Ruger do make the No 1 on it. The old 405s were popular as double rifles in India and there are quite a few available there even now. http://www.jagdwaffen-ollendorff.com/

I have used the 405Win. in a Winchester 1895 on pigs and it flattens them on the spot using Hornady 300g factory loads. I have read of .405Win being used on Water Buff' in the NT by Craig Boddington using a Ruger No1 but I think he used hand loads, it is a great old cartridge but hard to get rifles in Australia only Ruger import the No1 in .405Win. but on special order and Winchester will not import the 1895! I think they would sell every one if they did!

One of the Swedish members at AR gave me the link to this site. The best part of it is that the gunsmith spent ten years working for a "reputed manufacturer" in Australia - I wonder who it could be. In any case, he seems to have got his love for Enfields while working in Australia and hat's off to him for that.

Yes, that is a strikingly beautiful Enfield. I wish the Australian company that make new Enfields in the 308 class of cartridges would make affordable "production" versions of these. I am sure there would be a market for them in both Australia and the USA.

Shot with a Ruger No. 1 .405 Winchester, the author's water buffalo was by far the best he's taken after several trips to Australia.

You can argue as to whether the .405 Winchester is truly suitable for game such as buffalo, but there is no question that it's perfect for wild boar and, by extension, black bear and other game normally taken at fairly close range.

Brittany Boddington shot an exceptional Australian wild boar with her father's .405 Winchester Ruger No. 1. Performance on big hogs was so outstanding, the Boddingtons had no qualms about using the rifle on buffalo.

Brittany Boddington's water buffalo had very good horns and weighed close to 2,500 pounds. A single 300-grain Hornady bullet at very close range did the job nicely, making her professional hunter, Peter Harding, very happy.

I'm taking my Winchester 1895 in .405 to Africa this summer. I've lengthened the throat a few thousands of an inch and can now chamber Woodleigh 400 grain solids and (now obsolete) Barnes 350 grain X's. They shoot to the same point of aim with the Woodleighs about 2000 fps and the Barnes a little faster. I think it should be "wild bovine" capable... and I guess I'll find out.

I have a repro Lyman 21 sight on it and get really good accuracy for my aged and poor eyesight. It even has a flip "ghost ring" feature!

I also have ordered a special run of North Fork cup points and solids at 320 grains. They will have a SD of .279 or so and if they shoot well, I may dump the former and go with the latter as I expect I'll get 2150 or better with them.

To get the Barnes to fit in the magazine, I turned a tiny grove above the factory one and I see no pressure problems with the round seated a wee bit deeper (but took off a quarter grain of powder... Varget.. from the longer load.. and found the velocity to chrony exactly the same).

So. What game can you take with a .405? I'll pass on an elephant and leave that to my .470 (which worked just fine in November, btw) or my .450/.400 at somewhat faster velocity (but I feel pretty confident that a 40 yard shot buff won't really worry about the 100 fps difference).

I'm shot a lot of hogs in my life and one buffalo and I don't see any connection between the two AT ALL. Except that they are both animals. I'd think that a .405 is a bit light for a 2,500 pound buffalo... but maybe not. The statement just gets the wheels to turning. Magnificent animal... and I am referring to the buffalo this time.

I read the article quickly and he mentions using a 300 grain projectile but no where I believe does it say what velocity his ammo was doing. He mentions factory ammo doing around 2250 fps and being designed for a Marlin or Whinchester LA, but a No. 1 is bolt action strong and can do better.

How does a .405 Winchester compare to a .450/400 (say 3" or .400 Jeffrey for case capacity?

The 405 in a long throated Ruger No.1 or just a Ruger No. 1, for that matter is not the same gun as a .405 in a Win. M-95 by a long shot...

In a Ruger No. 1, I am sure you can duplicate a 400 gr. 450-400 at 2125 FPS, without even trying, and that is good enough to kill any animal on this earth encluding elephant with solids...

A Win. M-95 such as the Judges will certainly kill a buffalo with a 500 gr. bullet at 2000 FPS, hopefully. Well lets say 95% of the time!

I intend to have a M-95 then add a quarter rib, barrel band front sight, and swivel, custom stock it in nice Turkish, maybe add a Lyman lever sight and a silvers pad, fill it full of flat nose solids, it will be my walk about African back up gun..at least thats going to be my justifycation....
