"A father died protecting his children in a rare polar bear attack in Canada's northernmost territory of Nunavut.
Aaron Gibbons, 31, was on Sentry Island, a popular fishing and hunting spot on the west coast of Hudson Bay, when he encountered the bear on 3 July.
A relative said he "died a hero", telling his daughters to run while he put himself between them and the bear.
The children were unharmed, but Mr Gibbons died in the attack. Another adult later shot and killed the bear.
"He was enjoying his day with his children," Mr Gibbons's uncle Gordy Kidlapik told Canadian media. "They were surprised by a bear that had started to stalk or charge towards one of his children."
The father was unarmed at the time, police said, even though he would have had a rifle with him on the outing.
One of the girls, who are described as primary school age, called for help through the boat's radio.
"We actually heard the call for help," said Mr Kidlapik. "It was terrible to listen to."
Mr Gibbons's death has shocked his hometown of Arviat, about 10km (6.2 miles) from the site of the attack, which has grown accustomed to seeing polar bears as they migrate north.
"It's really just incredibly sad," said local lawmaker John Main on Canadian broadcaster CBC.
"We're a small community and when something like this happens, it affects the whole community."
With 380 polar bear sightings in the hamlet in 2017, the predominantly Inuit community has become increasingly concerned for public safety.
The number of polar bears in the Western Hudson Bay region remains stable at around 840, according to polar bear experts. However, they have noted a decline in the animals' body size and condition.
Polar bear excursions hosted in the region have also removed the wild animal's fear of humans, Mr Kidlapik alleged on Twitter, potentially resulting in more attacks on humans.
The last death from a polar bear attack in Nunavut was in 2000, about 200km (124 miles) up the coast from Arviat in Rankin Inlet, local authorities said.

Good on the daughter for knowing how to use the radio.

This^ may bring money into the community but around the world has lead to wild animals loosing their fear of people and attacking them. The Dingo's on Fraser Island being a case in point.

A limited hunting season would reduce the risk immensely.
How many people die from brown or grizzly bear attacks vs polar bears? What about black bears?

Thanks in part a lot to the animal lover Do gooders ,trying to create some weirdo ''affinity '' with wild animals ,like the Jurassic Movie with the bloke claiming ,'' its based on mutual respect '' ,[with his 3 or 4 ''pet'' Velociraptors] ,I just thought what BS they are spouting in these movies, in reality all they see people as ,is the same way we look at a hamburger ,something to be Eaten and that's it. Does anyone have ''mutual respect '' for a bloody hamburger ?

John - I think there are about 1/2 dozen deaths due to bears each year in North America - seems about right.
Due to possible lack of reporting, we might not get firm numbers on polar bear attacks due to remote villages of inuit.
That low number does not prevent me from always packing a rifle when in the bush.
What the actual number of attacks, false charges, etc are, I do not know. Those numbers might be available somewhere.
I do not understand people who insist on hiking on what amounts to game (includes bear) trails. They are usually 'armed' with bear spray that is inside their back-pack, (& most times inside the plastic blister-pack) exactly where it can not be reached in the 1- to 3 seconds they have to react to an attack.

i'm sure the inuits had their own hunt after the cops left. was watching i was prey and the one feller who was a hunter but scouting for a spot was attacked by a brown bear instead of drawing his pistol he drew the bear spray the bear ran through the fog and promptly chewed on his head. he did back off but circled around and chewed on him again.i think people don't understand how smart bears are and how they can fill with rage like a human can have charging through a hail of bullets never mind pepper spray not worrying about its well being like its been smokin meth

ducmarc I would say you are correct, also humans are affected to varying degrees. Some people are not affected or little affected, some can fight through the effect and I would say any animal is the same. I for one would not want to rely on pepper spray to save me from any animal that can do me serious damage.

Pepper spray is not very good on dogs, I hear. My runt springer walked right through a bear spray mist that was choking my wife and I, and the little dog was unaffected.

Forest service worker in this area was bow hunting last fall..sow griz charged him..dumped a can of pepper spray into her ..she blew threw it and mauled the shit out of him..he managed to get back up and work his way back to the truck..on his way she attacked him again..

I've got no experience with bears and little knowledge. Havinh watched e;even brown bears in a forest in Transylvania if bears give the "respect" to humans that they give to other bears, we should run quickly away, or climb a tree extremely fast like a young cub when "daddy" arrives ...

I was in Jasper Canada a couple of years back and had a discussion with our guide. All Licensed guides are required by law to carry bear spray. He stated that he had had a a few colleagues hospitalized by bear attacks. He also had had some hospitalized by blow back from the bear spray. He was of the opinion that the ones that coped the bear spray were more damaged than the ones mauled. They generally stayed longer in hospital and had longer recovery periods. Canadian law prevented the guides from carrying handguns but he was quite clear as what his preference would be.
