Alexander Henry - an inventory of surviving rifles
      #310540 - 16/01/18 10:11 PM

As we approach the 200th anniversary of Alexander Henry’s birth (4th of June 2018), as his great great grandson, I’d like to create an “inventory” of his rifles and shotguns, so that we can have an idea of how many are still in existence. I realise this can never be “complete”, and will be “out of date” as soon as it is created!

Donald Dallas’ book “Alexander Henry Rifle Maker” lists all serial numbers from no. 120 (starting when he took over Samuel Gourlay’s business in 1852) to no. 8545.

If you own one – and you’d like to help … please let me know
• the serial number
• some idea of where you live (country or city or post/ZIP code)
• anything especially interesting about the gun or its history

Please reply by Direct Message (DM) or to
Alex henry rifles (one word) at gmail dot com

You don’t need to give me your name, or your address – no need for it, really. I will store your forum moniker, and which forum.

I will not share personal information with anyone – this is purely for my interest and research.

I will be putting this message up on other forums. I will also trawl through auction sites to see what they have sold in the past.

In time, I’ll map the data on a world map (anonymity still totally preserved) using something like BatchGeo.

If you know other Alexander Henry owners, who probably don’t access this forum, please let them know too!

If you know of museums with Alexander Henrys, let me know!

I hope this will be very successful – it will be very interesting!

Thanks, in anticipation!

I have a few as well.
Perhaps John can set up a sub forum under the “Double Rifles Single Shots & Combinatuons” section.

I think it would be nice to see photos of the rifles to get an idea of not only what survives but also in what condition or state of originality.

Well I don’t want to hijack things ...

Feedback so far is slow. I’m busying myself raking through auction sites for Henry items, on the basis that, if it was auctioned, it still probably exists ... but I’ve set myself a limit of 10 years back.

I think it will build slowly ...

I reckon I may have one in a safe ... will have to double check.

EDITED TO ADD: NO I DON'T HAVE ONE. WAS CONFUSED BY ONE OF THE RIFLES IN MY MEMORY. SILLY.

Hi Huvius,

I would be disinclined to set up a specific forum at the moment. Too many forums at the moment, no used enough. So consolidating and culling is in order.

(If and) when I upgrade the forums, yes a subforum might be veryu possible. (The IF is because I was supposed to do it this winter ... now next winter ... but have to be around to do it.)

Congratulations on undertaking research on surviving Henry rifles. I sent you the serial number of my Henry.

There may be other forums that you can use to request information. Also, I wonder if you could post a request in Guns International and Gun Broker as many collectors search those web sites.

How will this information be preserved for future research by gun enthusiast? Will this information be used in an updated edition of Donald Dallas's new book?

85lc ... primarily I'm interested in "how many and which" Alexander Henry weapons exist ... for starters.

I don't know anything about Guns International and Gun Broker ... could do.

Many replies give me some details, and even photos, but it would be a huge ... HUGE ... task to undertake documenting all with photographs etc.

Re an update to Donald's book ... you never know but ...

Thanks for your continuing interest !!

That was a solid buy.
I was bidding light on it and had to bow out.

There’s a double 360 coming up at auction in Germany.
Super cool example.

I rec’d the AH today. I am very happy. It actually is nicer looking than the ad. I plan to try it out this weekend, using some ammo that shoots well in my Lancaster.

Alexander Henry's 200th birthday is 4th June - 3 and a bit weeks away ...

I'm still getting info on existing rifles and shotguns made in Edinburgh, but it's slowed a bit now.

Any more welcome though !

I have the Henry .450 3-1/4" single shot you just asked about on the ASSRA forums. #2584

I also have a fine Henry double .577 2-3/4" Express, #6449. You can see it here: http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat....3&fpart=all

Finally, I have a double .450 3-1/4" Express, #6115. You can see it photographed side-by-side with my .577 at this thread: http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=142729&an=0&page=4#Post142729

I formerly owned a hammerless double .450 3-1/4" Express, #6277. It now belongs to another collector. You can see it gutted and photographed side-by-side with my #6115 at this thread: http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat....4&fpart=all

I hope this helps.
