BRNO ZKK rifles actions come in three sized: short, standard and magnum. The ZKK 600 is the medium or standard length (.30-'06) action, the ZKK 601 is the small (.243, .308) short length action, and the ZKK 602 accommodates the long Magnum cartridges (.300 H&H, .375 H&H).

I'm not sure about the dates of the pop-up sights. The .375 H&H I bought in 1970 had one, but I recently had one added to a ZKK 600 action. The big negative factor about the action is the safety, which works backward for those of us accustomed to Model 70 Winchesters. However, a Model 70 type three position bolt shroud safety is available for it from several suppliers.

Hello wkudu,

As xausa said, these were the three action lenghts. The ZKK 600 has a magazine length of about 88 mm. Longer than the standard M98 Mauser.

By the way, xausa, do you know other supplier than Ed LaPour for a three position M70 type bolt shroud? I am very interested because seems to be Ed LaPour has stopped to make them.

Thank you!

PH

I am a "qualified Brno fan" and own a number of them in all configurations. I have hunted with the Model 21s and 22s, the ZG 47 as well as the ZKK series. For a workhorse rifle, the ZKK is hard to beat. One of the early ones with the peep sight in .270 is my go-to rifle. These guns developed a sterling reputation in Africa for their accuracy and dependability. The sights and the barrel band sling swivels endeared them to hunters. I have a 1967 brochure and it shows the peep sight as a standard feature. According to Gary Przibilla in a piece published in Guns & Game, production began in 1964 (I have never seen one this early). Supposedly, production transferred from Zbrojovka Brno to Uhersky Brod between 1964 and 1966 and the later guns were marked "Brno Arms". A 1976 rifle was observed still sporting the pop-up peep sight whereas a 1978 rifle did not. I am not sure how it was phased out. Production evidently ended in the early 90's with ads promoting the rifle running as late as 1995.

The lack of good books and reference works on the wonderful Brno series of firearms makes the pursuit of reliable information difficult.

I have a whole bunch of ZKK projects to sell. Actions, barreled actions, stocks, single stage triggers. All sorts of stuff but nothing with peep sights currently. If you are looking to build something let me know.

I have several BRNO's with Model 70 type 3 position safeties, but only one I had had installed myself some years ago. It was from Ed LaPour, but the others are slightly different, so I assumed that they were from other manufacturers. That may not be the case.

I understand that Ed plans to resume production once he has hired and trained someone to replace the assistant who is no longer with him.

The norwegian gunmaker Hansen makes high end "m70" bolt shrouds. With and without the extra "secura safety"

I have them on my Mausers and Brno's.
Recommended.

About the end of the factory ZKK peep sight, 1977/78 would be the last years to have them. I have a 1977 ZKK 601 .308 Win with it and the barrel band front sling swivel, and a friend has another one marked 1979 without any!

As the matter of fact. There are often a few 600 and 601 with the peep for sale here.
I can give anyone with interest a shout if wanted.
Here is one example :

G'Day Fella's,

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ZKK Donuts!

I once seen a like new ZKK 600 in 8x57, with a factory full length, Mannlicher stock and pop up peep sight. I have photo's of it somewhere?
The rifle is still around here I imagine but I will probably never see it again................

D'oh!
